Xenforo gets ****ty

Am now using Xenforo for arround 4 years.I was using till now Xenforo 1.xx

I am currently creating the forum from scratch and downloaded the possible one 2.xx .

All i can say Xenforo gets every year more ****ty.

Anything what is normal to customize the forum is being made at Xenforo extremly difficult.

If you are not a programer you are basicly forced to pay for every **** addon to achieve your goal on customasation.

Its really frustating heaving to read so much for even changing a stupid icon

More customization and features means more things to learn how to do.. or we could just have xenforo be really easy to use and have no features.

The mod community is what keeps the xenforo community going along and growing, it actually creates jobs, it actually improves xenforo by having paid mods and addons.

Admittedly the initial tone wasn't overly conducive to a meaningful discussion, but can we at least stay civilized and avoid personal attacks.

Obviously XenForo can't create systems to handle every customizations that might be possible. We try to give a lot of space for customizations that we might not account for by default, though yes, that will require making CSS and/or HTML changes in the templates. I can only recommend you vote for a suggestion that relates to the feature you're after as that helps form guidance of things we might consider for a future version.

(I'm guessing that you're probably referring to node icon customization. I'd at least note that this isn't something that XF has ever had, so the general approach which was necessary in XF1 would apply to XF2 as well, though the specifics would differ due to different approaches in the code. We've always said that XF2 is quite a different beast than XF1 in terms of the technical side, even if we have tried to keep the general user flow comparable. As such, there are definitely going to be different approaches that need to be taken to make customizations for your specific requirements.)

I'm sorry you feel this way. My opinion is that XF gets better and better with each new release. It's just my opinion though, and we are all entitled to state how we feel, positive or negative (read as constructive criticism).

If you are not a programer you are basicly forced to pay for every **** addon to achieve your goal on customasation.

There are a lot of free styles and add-ons available for you to use (and learn from, if you choose). Also, you can always ask for help,

To go along with it, even if indeed the tone of its message is not appropriate, if by buying XenForo you think of buying a forum that you can personalize with a WYSIWYG there is something to be disconcerted.

It is important to be well informed before using XenForo which is powerful but takes some time to become familiar with. And some don't have that time... Personnaly I XF, sometimes i get stuck on some things but most of the time i find the answer on the forums here.

I would recommend XenForo, but with a clear idea of what it means in terms of customization. Even if obviously it can be used as soon as it is installed, moreover, many forums are not personalized at all except for the logo and have impressive attendance statistics!

Download a good free style, then deconstruct it and learn from it. That's what I am doing right now. Same with add-ons, though I need to learn some PHP before I can start doing that.

I think XF is a wonderful basis to build on. You can do things with it that the devs probably did not anticipate. MS Dynamics CRM, at least in it heyday (I am less sanguine about the current Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement), was like that, too. But you need some skills to do it. CRM required you to be able to do some Javascript and have a good understanding of programming logic (and maybe actual coding skill if you needed a plug-in).

Unless they complete re-tool XF to a "low code, no code" format, the need for some level of skill to customize and style is going to be there.

Bias: I am very much old school IT going back to the early days of personal computing (MS incorporated when I was in grade 6 or thereabouts) when you often had to "do it yourself" to get what you really wanted. Not everything came neatly out of a box and that made it all the easier to customize and retool things.

Complaining about having to read to change an icon falls on deaf ears for me. Sorry.

I'm running a forum for a community.I don't have time to investigate for each small customazation i want.
I think changing icons,adding logo,colours,recaptcha should be already a standard......
When looking for somebody to make the changes i get quotes where i ask myself i could have bought 3 licenses for it and what the purpose of a license is when you need to pay for everything extra which is in my opinion a standard for a forum.

Your claims don't seem to match up with the reality.

That was 4 years ago on Xenforo 1 which is/was way easier than xenforo 2.
Now all you get are paid add ons or help where you need to be a programer to understand it

If you want a unique forum, you have to work hard, invest and again work hard. The half work is already done by XenForo, if you happy with it default settings and features, then leave how it is. If you want something bigger than that, you have to dig, buy new addons, install, uninstall delete having headache and sorting issues. You agreed for this when you become admin. Nothing comes easy or free mate.
