Wordpress Drama

XenForo's core/framework is really good... it's a shame it's boxed into calling itself a forum. If XF was also a commercial framework or commercial blog, there's a lot more potential customers than ones looking specifically for a forum.

My current project is a private forum for around 500 members which is a communication platform for an athletics club. I'm in the process of building out a bunch of tools to automate a lot of the weekly data processing requirements that has previously been very manual based on csv and spreadsheet data.

As a development framework, I find XenForo a pleasure to work with - especially given the security, user management, plugin and UI frameworks that do most of the heavy lifting for us.

This seems to be a bit of a pattern for my more recent projects - they are much less about the forum and more about utilising the platform as a development framework to add value on top of the core functions. Being able to easily replace the forum functionality with something else would certainly take this approach to the next level.

I once made the mistake of building an application that used WordPress as the platform - it worked, but then 5+ years later when I went to upgrade the application to fix something that had been broken by a 3rd party API changing (Twitter  ) - I couldn't work out how the whole thing held together (WP code is a complete mess) and just gave up - I binned the entire site and started from scratch.

The new checkbox he added has made some accessibility issues for the team of volunteers who help with making Wordpress slightly accessible, and Matts response was just to recommend replacing them. Accessibility is very difficult, because just following guidelines is generally not enough, and it takes people with various disabilities (or expertise) to help with fixing issues.

So XF open sources a core framework and basic blog add on for free.

XF Community, Gallery, Resource Manager, ES etc. all remain paid 1st party add ons.

All of a sudden there's a best in class free blogging platform and framework that's way more developer friendly and modern than WP.

Influx of developers results in a huge boost to the 3rd party ecosystem.

A proper CMS / Advanced custom fields system could be released 1st or 3rd party to help fill the CMS gap side of things.

Profit??!

I doubt this would happen, but if it did, I would see them going the fair source route: https://fair.io/about/

Hence why i don't go the XF addon.
You can have a simple free account on wordpress and ask people to sign up with their own blogs with their own free accounts.

But i haven't blogged in ages. If i choose to blog i use one note anyway which is part of Office 365 anyway.

Wouldn’t need to open source it. That’s a different beast. Be a commercial blog/CMS platform is what I would do… honestly even if it’s the same price as XF now (just give people the option to install blog and/or forum). A blog/CMS that matched (and exceeded) what WordPress does out of the box could be banged out in a week if you used the XF framework.

Would open up a whole new revenue stream…

Anyway, that's what I would do... ;)
You're hired.

now you are really hired.

Xenforo Documents would be even better.

Oh yes add ecommerce product and we're all set 😍🙂
Done. Hah

If Xenforo did make a CMS platform ... who would be the competitors ? (There must be existing products already) (How good are they?)
Wordpress have one of those.
You're made to fill it up with articles and other stuff.
Once you sign up and add your site to it.
It's the same as any website builder.

Other competitors joomla, wix, etc

The xenForo Articles system is already better than Wordpress in many regards and once the editor is improved it will be even better.
I don't doubt that is pretty good.

I was trying to get a what EXISTING frameworks are there that would be competitors to the "Xenforo Framework" (as being discussed).

Now, it's okay that I love XenForo, but you also have to be pragmatic in saying things. Honestly, what is your basis for supporting this?!
