XF 2.2 Why do I get a *View Attachment* link rather than being shown the attachment?

This is so annoying. I copy the attachment code from one post to another, but the attachment never shows. I just get the link.
Why?

That has been the case since the very first version of XF.

Attachments are only rendered in their host content.

Use embed code to show them elsewhere.

It absolutely isn’t. I imagine there must be s as suggestion to make this work more intuitively.
