what's a good antivirus program?

I used to use AVG - now I just stick with Windows 7's built-in Microsoft Security Essentials. It's very rare for me to actually download anything that might in any way be compromised, to be honest.

Nod32.

Don't like most programs, AVG free causes way too much problems, McAffee is something I honestly hate. Nod32 is one of the few programs that's actually really decent on almost every area.

My computer is as naked as the day I was born.

I like the feeling of not having my computer constantly monitored and me having to sacrifice performance for that.

I do run full backups nightly just in case.

Not all AV/Firewalls require a sacrifice in performance, just the majority of them.

Avast Free Edition + SpyBot SD & Malware Bytes.

Used to use AVG but just screwed my computer up something horrific. Steer well clear of any Norton's products, they're almost as big a virus as Windows :P.

I use the free edition of Avira, and also the paid version of Malwarebytes. Going back to Avira, I like the simple but logical interface, impressive detection rates, and light use of system resources.
