What Do You Have A Degree In?

Starting MEng Computer Games Development at QUB next month :)

While it's currently their hardest computer/programming related course on offer, might refocus after the first year to something that looks slightly better on a CV :p

I have my GCSE's and an AQA in I.T.

I did go to college to study Business Management but I ended up dropping out, so no degree for me.

I got a BS.c in Marine Technology as well as the MS.c, so I am actually what is called Naval Architect, though my day to day job has very little do with architecture, very much to do with yelling at different people and making decisions on the fly....

I'm too stupid for college, but I do have a "generic" associates degree. I earned it with military training (counts as college credits / depends on the school) and online courses.

Hermit saving while in the military and the housing market crash has helped me tremendously, I own two paid-off rental houses, and my house is about 50% paid off so far.

I'm doing ok I suppose... I admire you college folks.

Lord that just there made me laugh!!! lollll
Just being silly. Unfortunately though, I have no college degree. It was fully my intention to continue schooling right after highschool, going for a degree in music education or music performance ((I'm a tubist actually)) --- It just so happens that real life kinda took charge and priorities changed. That was back in '93 --- I'm not sure if ever I will go for a college degree now, but the thought is always in the back of my mind...

Graduate from The Johns Hopkins University. Worked through them and took some loans (that I'm still paying today). :)

B.A. in Government
M.A. in Government

Did A-Level business studies, economics, biology and psychology.

Offered uni places anywhere I wanted... declined them all and went straight into business. Didn't see the point in obtaining tens of thousands of pounds worth of debt for a peice of paper.

Was the right call aswell, all my mates are now out of uni with their various degrees, and of maybe 20 of them, only 2 actually got anything out of it (arguably one, as the second was pretty much lined up for the job whatever happened). The other 18 are in the same boat as many students. No job and a shed load of debt, and nearly all of them agree uni was a complete waste of time and money.

Went to a hippie commune instead of college.
Learned Carpentry and many other skills, including getting along with people.

In a complete turnabout, I actually taught some classes (adult) at Smith College, so I can claim (with some great exaggeration) that I taught on an Ivy League Campus.
;)

But I did end up paying for 3 kids to get advanced degrees in computer science, law, deaf education, teaching, social work, etc.

Depends on what you do, for me it is basically impossible to get a job within the shipping industry without a degree. I also get the feeling that many students aren't as aware of their possible career while studying, never trying to network or even get a related job over summer vacation. I managed to work on several offices, and out of all places, I got hired by a guy I shared office with for one week during easter while writing my thesis. To top it off, I got this while picking up my stuff from my apartment from University.

It is hard to get a job, but with a decent degree and some networking, you will be able to get one..

Very cool. I have a degree in music ed. Been teaching instrumental music (starting privately, then public ed) for about 40 years now.
I'm a woodwind player (sax, flute & clarinet), but lately have been enamored with bass guitar.
I probably don't need to tell you how valuable tuba players are. I feel like I've spent my whole life recruiting kids to play tuba!

I hope you'll be able to fulfill your dream one day. School principals will tell you that the hardest positions to fill are the football coach and the band director. There is a definite need for caring and talented individuals in music education.

Ha! I was one of the kids that started on clarinet. It was a major fail. Then I moved to trumpet actually... My lips were too big ((if ever such a thing could be LOL)) so it made playing a little uncomfortable for me. I loved classical music from the beginning though and was determined to be in the band. So my band director who's a tubist played a wonderful tune for me. I think it may have been a selection from Don Haddad's Suite for Tuba & Piano... I fell immediately in love with the somber, yet jovial tone and my affair with the tuba began. I eventually went on to be first chair All-State TN tubist and a slew of other performance awards... Then real life.

I haven't picked up a horn in over a decade - but it's weird. I dream about playing all the time. I suppose it's like riding a bike. You never forget...

Anyway - I'm a strong believer in "if it's meant to be - it will simply be." I haven't given up hope that one day I will be able to go back to school and pursure music education or music performance. It would be a dream to be in the Pride of the Southland band for UT... But I'm not holding my breath LOL

Thanks so much for your commentary and 40 years!?! Wow - you are to be commended! Congratulations on what I'm sure has been a stellar career from the sounds of it!

J.

Hoping to go for CS/Engineering next year, any advice? When I say "advice", I mean anything that doesn't result in me jumping in front of the nearest bus or any other action which would cause my life to end prematurely.
