"It is without a doubt the best forum software on the market. And to be honest I like the new sleek look. Plus you are paying for the peice of mind more than anything. Almost all other forum software packages have lack luster security and 0day exploits. Vbulletin fixes them as soon as they know and does a good job of it too.. But as always thats just my opinion.."

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But, conclusory statements as "its the best" without support are not very persuasive. Some people like vanilla ice cream, others like chocolate. Saying one is better than the other without support is unpersuasive (though, I think the better analogy is chocolate ice cream vs. anchovy ice cream).

As for paying for piece of mind? Years of undelivered promises from IB does not give me any piece of mind.

All that said, best of luck and good wishes for those who feel this is a good product for them. I am interested to see what happens when anyone ( I have not heard of a single upgrade of an actual site to vB5) actually moves their site. I am interested if it actually works in the real world.
lol @ piece of mind. Piece of insanity more like it. I was a lil hyped up to create styles for it but between the some vb support dude basically trolling me and shamil's vB5 installation being so jacked up I couldn't make a single style, I completely lost interest.

That's exactly the reason I did not upgrade to vb4, no peace of mind, staying with vb3 seemed a better bet (and turned out it was). vb5 is ten times worse by the look of it, so I have no idea what that guy smokes.

It takes forever to load, my browser has been hanging for 10 seconds while loading a page mostly made of white empty space.

Seriously, it's a piece of crap.

Have you noticed how messed up the page is during the 10 seconds it takes to load? Stuff popping everywhere, then moving to the side, moving down, Bam, then going to its final definitive place.

Everyone calm down, vB5 will be almost deserving of being considered "Gold" when vB6 is right around the corner.
No Doubt!!! The good news is v6 should only be a cpl years away the bad news is it will cost 400.00 or more and be in worse shape then v5 is today.. Thats my prediction, and im sticking to it..

I'm surprised they put this up for public beta, especially in light of the mess vb4 was in when they released it as gold. To calm people's fears, they should have held off until it was close to RC territory.

History repeats itself.
That seems to be the sadest part of this. All they needed were one or two expert coders with original ideas and concepts, leave them alone for a year or two and see what they come up with. A style is a style, it means little. The products, features and performance is everything. This is what they seem unable to wrap within their minds at VB.

Other developers seem to be able to produce this stuff with approximately 20 queries, as the end product. That means their developers aren't worth a pinch of what they're paying them, as they're hacks, not true masters of development.

The only thing that was keeping one of my forums with vBulletin, is going to die. A professionally supported German version of the forum.
vBulletin Germany announced that IB has pretty much sh*t-canned them and nobody knows anything and the little they know, they can't discuss openly.
What a sorry state of afairs and what a sad end for a formerly great piece of software...

I haven't been recommending vBulletin to anyone since 4.0 came out and that won't change, I see now. vBulletin 4 is still a piece of crap (sorry, but it is). And they are already talking of releasing 5? And SELLING it already?
I can't believe how short-sighted the people at IB seem to be. Buy it, bleed it dry, drop it, move on. Great idea. Nothing like sustainability in business, eh?

vB5 looks to me like a sad attempt at catching up in a race they have no hope of winning. It looks so desperate, so badly thought through, so unintuitive. I know for sure now that I will be looking for a different forum software for my only vBulletin forum.
I haven't been here in a while so who knows, maybe XenForo has a good German version now? :D

That whole vBulletin Germany thing is weird.
I have no idea what IB could be thinking.

This entertains the **** out of me. It never ceases to amaze me at this point, how, considering everything that has happened up to this point with xenForo and IB, that someone can come up with new **** on IB screwing up and then state, "I have no idea what IB could be thinking."

It came out of nowhere! Who would have ever thunk it!

It is a sorry state of affairs over there. I only run a small forum, so to expect me to pay $249 for an unimpressive upgrade doesn't impress me. I've considered moving before, am really considering so now. Shame there are matters which are, ahem, outstanding at present, otherwise I think I would be in the process of moving already.

Entering into conspiracy land here.....but all the timing would work out. Let's pretend that IB really thought they would kick butt with their new version...and said version, like every other piece of software, is a bit behind in terms of being fully ready.

The lawsuit is stretching out to about exactly that time - that is, IB may have calculated that their new VBB would be so great - that if they could hamstring XF just until about now - the market would take care of the rest.

If such was the case, they now have to think on their feet and do a reset.

It's all speculation, but the parent companies (investment houses) which oversee this stuff usually have very high standards. They don't think like Bob B (I know his thinking by his blog, actions over the years, etc.). They are usually very professional. One can only imagine what they think or what goals they have stated to Bon and the IB staff. The amount of money involved is tiny for them - but it's still a matter of principle. These venture guys don't hang onto losers for too long. XF is sitting here worried - as they should be - but the chances are also good that IB is on borrowed time themselves!

Of course, repeating, that is total speculation. But based on revenues and sales and reputation and the scuttlebutt about many of the sites they bought, it's pretty safe to say they are not firing on all cylinders.

The only problem with that is I suspect that VB is merely a side-project for their car websites and even then IB is an inconsequential part of their parent company.

I'd speculate that the advertising revenue on one of their sites dwarfs their revenue from VB license sales.
