1. Lightbox doesn't work at all on smaller embedded images (see second image in that thread) - this may be intentional, but just seems inconsistent since it does open when they aren't embedded
2. With embedded images the lightbox doesn't allow you to scroll through the images
3. The zoom icon on large images (when not grayed out) doesn't seem to actually do anything (have tested on Brave, Chrome, and Safari)

The third* image is already displayed full size so it doesn't require opening in the lightbox.

This was an intentional design decision in 2.0. There are no plans to change it at this point (so you may wish to create a suggestion if one doesn't exist).

In the images in the linked thread, the zoom icon is greyed out on all of them, intentionally. The function is to zoom the image to full size, but it is only enabled if the image is currently shrunk to display in the lightbox. As the lightbox is already displaying the images full sized (at least as is the case on my 13" MacBook Pro) the zoom icon isn't needed.

That all said, I acknowledge there are some issues with the lightbox. There is one or two other bug reports related to the lightbox. Ultimately it will be replaced with something else but that's not an insignificant task.
