Time for a new Xenforo theme?

Really though, the default theme doesn't matter as much. The important thing is the building blocks provided. Then sites can go on and customize it to make it something special for their own communities.

I totally agree. The building blocks and tools to make the theme to our own liking are the key.

Anyone with a well established community will also know how much users hate change, so we always have to be careful about making major changes to existing themes/functionality (not that this should hinder progress for those that want to see it)

I think it stands to reason and goes without saying that since 2.0 will almost be a rewrite, that the templates will change. Newer technology in the latest CSS and HTML, not to mention new microformats will I am sure all be adopted in keeping with modernity.

The way that the header/masthead/navigation is constructed in default XF is a nightmare to modify. Oops... I know better than to say anything negative about XF.
Uh... you really think - that without Pages - IPS is any better?

IPS was a non solution for me back when most of us VB whingers had to "choose our fate" - remember those times guys?

I perfectly agree. Indeed the default theme to me always looked bland and unappealing, the color palette is off as well, like an early 2000's site (it doesn't look "modern" to me).
That's me though but I know a few people who agreed with me on this when we switched our theme in our community. But its all a matter of taste...

If it was so awful, it wouldn't be so widely used

I doubt that. When was the last time the herd was right? Weapons of mass destruction? Buy high and sell low? You know how people are: followers. As for me, show me which way the herd is going, and I'll proceed in the opposite direction, whistling.

Well, considering that the "herd" is mass movement - and mass movement entails more people.. I think I'll follow the herd in this case.
I've gotten burned out on the gradients, the rounded corners, that whole look. It's tired and old. Why not throw some lens flare in for effect.

Man, what's with that all this "flat" stuff, anyway? It's hilarious! When I look at the "cool" new "flat" designs, I feel like I've been transported back 20 years. Everything old is new again! It's all flat! Hurrah. No shadows. No gradients. Just lines and colors and words that are clickable but you wouldn't know it because they look just like words that aren't clickable! Bring out the fat ties, baby. They're in again. (See, Martha, I told you if I waited long enough....)

Hey, you'd think with all this simplicity everywhere that our operating systems and software would be getting SUPER FAST, wouldn't you? I mean, there's so much less to process! But guess what? Everything's friggin slower! iOS 6 to 7? Slower! Crippling-my-iPad-slower! Slower! Hey, flat must be FAT! Joke's on us!

But flat is in. Flat is cool. And life's a gas. Why not? Our attention spans are short. And we're not doing anything that's really useful with technology anyway. Might as well "make it new" every two years so that our lives can be about relearning technology rather than getting stuff done, right? We're not saving any time with technology, anyway, are we? We're really just playing with technology for technology's sake! So let's make it new! Why not? Let's make it flat!

"You know what drives me crazy? It's all these people talking about how great technology is, and how it saves all this time. But what good is saved time if nobody uses it? If it just turns into more busy work. You never hear somebody say, 'With the time I've saved by using my word processor, I'm gonna go to a Zen monastery and hang out'. I mean, you never hear that."

Someone who has done very little customization to the styling on their own forum would probably never understand why people are complaining about the use of gradients.
