XF 1.2 Threads, Discussions and Conversations

Is the Discussions Per Page on some kind of cache or anything? Ive set it to 5 and it's still showing the default 20.

Discussions per page controls the number of threads per page.

You need to change the messages per page setting.

Discussions = Threads (and conversations)

Changing discussions Per Page will change how many Threads are shown within a forum.

What you have linked to is a single thread showing Posts (Messages). If you want to change the number of Messages Per Page, which is in ACP > Options > Messages
