Awaiting feedback Thread counts are off the charts high.

What was the latest change done to the forum, like installing a third party add-on or doing some manual changes to the files for example, prior to this happening? Changes like this are almost always triggered by something. They just don't occur out of nowhere. That would help imo to pinpoint the cause of the issue.

If there was a change, I can't recall exactly what it would be or if it was timed with this phenomenon. The only issue we have had a real difficulty in the past year is our search engine not working properly. Other than that, nothing has dramatically changed.

Other than that, nothing has dramatically changed.
The change doesn't have to be dramatic or big in order to cause an issue. For example, if you have installed a small third party add-on that it's poorly coded with infinite loops or inefficient database queries to just name a few things, it can cause huge issues. Speaking of add-ons, what add-ons have you installed?

What about server side, anything changed in there recently prior to the issue happening?

I noticed that you listed your forum version as 2.3.0. That's an older version. Have you considered to upgrade to the current latest version? That might fix the issue at hand, not to mention the security benefits as well as the numerous bugs that have been fixed since that version.

Installing 2.3.8 and then getting Elastisearch to be stable proved to be major challenge. We are kind of stuck there.

I'll have to dig in a little further.

Automated triage: Awaiting feedback

Thank you for reporting this issue. View counts are added to threads by a scheduled task every 15 minutes. If that task keeps failing part-way, the same views can be counted again on every run. We need a little more detail to check whether that is happening on your site.

  • Do the forum or server error logs show errors from the 'views' cron or from queries on xf_thread_view or xf_content_activity_log? Memory errors and 'MySQL server has gone away' or packet-size errors also count.
  • Does xf_thread_view hold many rows that are still there after a quarter-hour cron run (:00, :15, :30, :45)? Does the view count of an affected thread jump by a large amount at each of those times?
  • What are the Options > Threads, discussions and conversations > view count settings for guests and robots? Do your access logs show heavy unidentified bot traffic to the affected threads?
  • Which add-ons are installed, especially any that change thread views or the activity/analytics logging?

This is an automated assessment. A member of staff may review and update it.
