This is why I hate Paypal

PayPal is owned by eBay- and while (knock wood) I have not yet experienced problems with PayPal I know first hand that eBay has the worst customer service I have ever seen from any major technology/internet company- they've wasted hours of my time over trivial amounts of money and on several occasions outright lied to me. I would do anything in my power to see something come along and sweep both eBay and PayPal out or relevance. But until that happens PayPal is still the de facto standard for online payments.

What you said... but make it 100 times worse. Then, you will only be scratching the surface of how crap the Paypal customer service is.

PayPal didn't just wake up one morning and decide to be awkward - it costs them money too, processing documents and employing staff to do so. A lot of this is driven by increasingly strict laws on money laundering and the responsibility of banking to prevent (or avoid liability for) criminality. You also have to consider that PayPal does get fraudulent applications, lots of them, so if anything doesn't look quite right, they will investigate.

That doesn't of course excuse bad service - being inept at customer service or not having properly trained staff - or enough of them - to deal with the volume of applications is awful. The main issue for me is coming up against the "corporation mentality" - also having no proper point of contact - once these big companies lock you out, it's far too difficult for genuine people to get stuff resolved.

The good news is more and more competition for PayPal. Switching to someone else is the best way to complain. Hopefully in a few years there will be enough competition out there to do so.
I have had a PayPal business account for 4-5 years and I have not had any problems. I know people that have. You have to follow their policy. If you don't agree with it, then you need to find someone else.

My business account with PayPal just turned 11 years old; I've had one dispute to resolve in that 11 years and otherwise send/receive funds in significant quantities without issue. I did recently create a personal account for use in a specific country and I did need to provide a copy of my local government ID (i.e. Drivers License) and that was that.

The OP asked about the impact of not having a PayPal option and I think it really depends on the business model and how your business works. Obviously, you want the customer to be able to pay in a a way that is comfortable for them, but still reasonable for the business to maintain. Yeah, a lot of setup work needs to be done, but it should be smooth sailing after that. (except for disputes from not-so-credible customers)

The other point is that [some] businesses are labeled as high-risk. Merchant account providers usually have a list of business types that are deemed 'high-risk' and if your business type falls on that list, it will be hard to use a service like PayPal. (Otherwise, Merchant account providers will charge you an arm and a leg to process payments for your business.)

I wholeheartedly agree that more EFT/payment options are needed, but the financial regulators in each respective country have specific rules in place that make such a business difficult to run. The more regulation put in place, makes it that much harder for a business to get started in accepting payments.

I think its easy to complain about Paypal, but seriously, do you ever view the issues from their side? The sheer amount of scammers and such they must deal with daily trying to open accounts for ominous purposes... the protocols they have in place help protect everyone from these issues. Yes, some honest people get caught in these protocols, but for the most part, they catch most fraud before it happens through having developed their protocols over all these years through experience.

Other online payment processors are mostly amateurs compared to Paypal in this instance.

If you don't like Paypal, then go to your bank and see just how hard it is to get an actual payment processor setup on your website via them. You'll really have something to complain about then, let alone their fee's and charges per transaction that most banks charge in comparison to someone like Paypal. You'll beg for Paypal to manage your online payments after you've dealt with your banks processes.

My bank has never locked my money away without any way of me unlocking it. It also has not made me submit the same forms over 20 times and each time they confirm the form is accepted all of a sudden it goes missing.

I hate them for many reasons. None more so than when Xenforo Resources was $20, but because of an issue I was having with them at the time prevented me from buying it. The few other routes to get Resources at the time were not possible for me. So I missed the promo. Which sucks.

Are you using your bank account with your bank for payment processing through them? Because they do lock transaction monies if disputes arise.

No I'm not. But I have never had a paypal dispute either. It was locked because I got paid "more than usual" in a single month, so they locked the account.

It would indeed suck if my bank account was locked and I was unable to access money from it simply because I did a bit more overtime at work.

Just a quick update. I have STILL not had my account unlocked. I sent an e-mail a few days ago asking when it will be unlocked and have heard nothing at all. 10/10 service.
