I was interested in sparkpost but couldn't get past the domain verification as it didn't recognise my domain as validChanged again to SparkPost for 100k free, super easy setup and working great.

Same procedure was with SparkPost, but I need more then 12k free emails. Mailgun is good also, was using it for some time.I've switched to mailgun few days ago. Seem to work very well.
Process of switching was painless, but it wasn't instant. It required adding few records to domain then wait until records update. After that it was a simple matter of switching SMTP details.

How does mailgun/sendgrid compare to mandrill? Specifically automated bounces handling. I had a quick peek at both this weekend, prefer the mailgun workflow so far.
Mandrill will pipe bounced email to any domain email so XF can handle the rejection gracefully and kick your user. Could not find equivalent functionality on mailgun but perhaps I wasn't looking hard enough.
