Site Timing out when posting

When posting threads or just a quick reply, my site seems to time out.

it does not seem to be a server fault since my server load is very minimal at around 0.60 ave. So I am not sure what is actually causing this, some times I go into a couple of threads and post, and it posts fine, but other times and most of the time its timing out, and I'd need to refresh to see my post.

If anyone has a solution please let me know!

No, that's the problem, one user has had the problem sporadically, using Chrome 16, just from "liking" a post. I was just comiserating with the "server did not respond in time" error people to see if anybody else has a similar problem.

Emails aren't sent when "likes" are registered are they? I don't think so. I'm using nginx too, on a smaller VPS, but haven't seen any problems in munin with performance.

What I do is run a local copy of Exim which PHP sends the mail to directly (basically a fire and forget about it). Then Exim runs a queue runner every 5 mins and offloads the mail to my smarthost. This way PHP doesn't timeout as Exim is always running.

Exim is a message transfer agent (MTA) developed at the University of Cambridge for use on Unix systems connected to the Internet.

I've had the same problem. But my firewall was blocking the outgoing traffic on TCP 465 (I'm using an external smtp server to send mail)
I opened the port and Problem solved :)
