XF 1.4 Set up a user to only see one sub forum

We have lots of sub forums. I want to create a new one but it should only be seen by users I pick. That's fine, I just make it private then in permissions allow the users in.

However I don't want them to see all the other sub forums either. How do I do that please?

So to be clear when the picked users login they just see the one private forum.

You just revoke their (i.e. their user group) permissions to view the other forums.

Set up the forum for them as a private forum, and only that user group is given viewing permissions

Not if the user group they are does not have those forum permissions. (Node based permissions as opposed to general permissions)
