Recaptcha has stopped working on a bunch of Xenforo sites

Hi folks,
I've been contacting a bunch of XF sites today (for an unrelated reason) and several had the same broken Recaptcha system. E,g, http://afritalks.com/misc/contact

also http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/misc/contact and https://www.xpgamesaves.com/misc/contact
which means people won't be able to register or contact them to tell them they can't register.
Quite an issue for a lot of sites (more than 10% of the ones I tried) and they are blissfully unaware.

The recommended course of action is to update to XF 1.5.16 or enable a different captcha. Google is no longer supporting reCAPTCHA v1

We've had reCAPTCHA v2 in XF since XF 1.4.4, so any site running an XF version released in the last over 3 years will be able to switch to that though indeed it became the automatic default and replaces v1 as of XF 2.0.0 or XF 1.5.16.

Most forum owners are obvlious to the basics such as updating and securing their forums. Take Vertical Scope, one of the largest owners of forums in the world. They can't even properly host or run their forums without constantly annoying their members. Their only advantage is the current market share that they hold and it was achieved by raising money and buying out the hard work others put into those forums.

Just had a friend yesterday send me a message who has been a member of Wrangler Forum for over a decade. It's owned by Verticalscope Scope now.



Moral of the story: You can't fix something caused by laziness or ignorance.
