They work in that forum. So probably it's a conflict with another addon on my forum. I'll dig and let you know later today

It is already added and can be activated in product's options page. You can see it at

You are absolutely right, it is shown to all visitors if enabled from Admin Panel, with the list of all viewable forums without permission check. It shows on forum home page only (forum_list template). Let us know if you think the button should be permission-based, so not to show it if user does not have permission to post in any of forums.
Login error was from another product and is fixed now.

Tested this fully on XenForo 1.4.0 clean install and could not reproduce the error or the problem with the button not appearing. Double-checked the code on the line where you get the error, and I see, that with default XenForo code this error would be technically impossible to reproduce, and this part is the same in both 1.4.x and 1.5.x versions.
Please check Admin Panel -> Tools -> Server Logs page. You may have some additional information about the error. I assume you are using some add-on, that heavily modifies both the variables and templates loading on the forum page, which makes it impossible for our add-on to enhance home page functionality with custom features. Please provide full error trace you can find in Server Logs and we may understand which add-on that could be. You can also try to disable some add-ons that you think might cause this and try again, to see if the error is gone.

I've added a workaround. I still don't see the 'post new thread' button though it is less important for me.
A bigger issue is that the thread prefix doesn't show in the quick thread field on the home page. This causes the message to be rejected.
The prefix does show in the specific forum.
