Prevent template modifications?

I can select this options in the templates for the addons I created:

Prevent template modifications from being automatically applied

There are no more details. So I wonder what effects are when I enable this. In what cases should/may you enable this option?

I suspect it is rarely used.

If you have template modifications (from the TM system in XF) that you do not want to be applied to a specific template in a specific style, you can click this to prevent it from being applied. This is effectively an admin option, rather than a developer option, so it isn't relevant to you as a developer.
