Post-to-Post replies with expandable reply context

XenForo keeps everything in one flat, chronological stream. Hitting Reply just inserts a quote; it doesn’t actually record which post you’re responding to.

I’m proposing a small structural upgrade: whenever someone replies to a specific post, XenForo should store an optional parent‑post ID. The normal thread view stays exactly the same, but this unlocks a few lightweight improvements:

“In reply to…” link above the reply

“View replies” toggle on the parent post

Inline expansion without losing your place

Stable permalinks for parent ↔ reply

Graceful handling of deleted/ignored/moderated posts

API + webhook exposure for the relationship

This adds the contextual navigation people like in Discourse, and it sets the stage for an optional Reddit‑style threaded view with collapsible branches. It’s about reading and conversation structure.

For older forums, quoted post IDs could be linked automatically. A migration tool could optionally use AI to suggest high‑confidence parent/child relationships, but anything uncertain should stay unlinked rather than forcing a fake thread structure.

but it does... the post id is in the link/bbcode

Code:

True but I am talking about a specific reference in the DB and not in BBCode. One of the challenges with this you may also find is that spammers will quote something and then inject a false link or nonsense in the quote which the OP or poster they are replying to never wrote.

yup, it becomes part of the post text, it is not linked and put in as exactly as it was. reason being, you couldn't edit it if you did, it would be a read-only block up top, not able to

do this

with it.
Unless you filter for links and run it through some kind of link checker, which might actually be possible these days, or if a link is added just throw it into moderation.

My original idea for this was to make more Discourse-y or Reddity features but now that you mention this the synapses are firing
