XF 2.2 PHP 8.2 should I upgrade?

Absolutely! I'm currently running two sites on 2.2.15 with PHP 8.2 and have no issues. PHP 8.3 is available to me, but I've not tested it as yet, but will sometime soon and if I run into any issues I can switch back to 8.2 until any such issues are resolved.

Similar. I'll probably wait for 2.3 to upgrade my PHP at this point. 8.2 is the recommended for 2.2.15 and is working fine.

If everything works for you, there's no need to upgrade PHP
Definitely not a good idea considering 7.4 has been totally unsupported by PHP since November 2022. That's one very significant reason to upgrade.

This line of thinking is also what keeps people using very old versions forever, which holds developers back from being able to use newer PHP features as everything still needs to support old versions. They may as well not release new versions.

Xenforo is recommending upgrading to php version 8.2 in the admin console. However, when I make the switch, the forum becomes inaccessible.

Any ideas why this might happen?

The PHP build either doesn't meet the requirements, there is a third party add-on involved, or some issue with the build itself.

What is the error message?

Sorry but that is about the same as "my car doesn't work, why is that?"

No one can answer that question without more information.

Check your error logs for starters.

No error message in the server logs, the site just doesn't render. Any ideas where I could look to see the error?

Yes, XF 2.2.15 is rated for it and you'll benefit from all the significant security, feature and performance improvements that come with it, so don't hesitate. My XF Cloud installation is running with it, so that's as good an endorsement as you could possibly get since it's the XF admins that have upgraded to it.

I do recommend a bit of careful testing after the upgrade though, especially regarding your add-ons, as @MySiteGuy pointed out and be prepared to roll back if necessary.
