[OzzModz] RSS Feed Filter

[OzzModz] RSS Feed Filter 2.0.6

No permission to download
Wanted to see what you thought about this idea - or if an addon already exists that you know of.

Use Case -

I have a thread at the top of my news forum that is dedicated to an rss feed from twitter. Every 60 minutes or so, the board polls twitter for an update on a specific handle (@michaeljackson)

Problem -
When a new tweet is inserted into the thread, the forum of course shows the latest post on the forum view for that specified node. I'd like it so when a new post is created with a new tweet, the thread remains excluded from the latest posts for that node. I don't want it to distract from the other news within the forum being the latest post, if that makes sense.

Ya. I just don't want to create a whole new thread for an rss feed that I have within one thread. I guess it's a weird ask.

@Ozzy47 Just wanted your perspective, and wanted to try and explain something a bit better..

I've got a node decicated to rss threads from twitter. I don't want them to be the center of attention, ever - but I want them to be in that node as a historical reference, an archive if you will. When a new tweet is posted, the forum will then indicate it has a new post - as a new thread has been created.

As you can see in my above illustration - the thread posted in this node titled 'shiny and sparkly xxxx' shows as the latest post posted. I want to exclude that, and only show the latest posts from the nodes within this category. I checked the node setting 'Include threads from this forum when users click "New posts"' - which makes no difference, as that's only for 'New Posts', but thought I'd try.

Any suggestions?

Ozzy, your add-on is great.

But i have a suggestion: can you invert the filter effect?

My RSS Feeds catch a lot of usefulness information, maybe, if we can add certain words to NOT POST the content with this keyword, it would be great to filter the unwanted content.

If you can make this happen, would be a great addition.

Thanks!

What I’ve seen people do is import the feeds into a staff forum, then move the ones they want out into the public forum and trash the junk ones.

A couple months ago we started doing what Ozzy47 mentioned above...and it has definitely improved the quality & appropriateness of the RSS article's that forum members see publicly. It does require more effort from forum staff...but it's not too bad. I think we're also seeing more posts/discussions generated from RSS articles...since most/all RSS articles that get posted are now way more forum topic related.:)

Previously without this extra layer of RSS article quality control...we hardly ever received posts from members in the RSS feed articles.

I love this add-on, thank you!

Can you possibly add a keyword filter box to filter OUT? This is perfect for my needs but I have certain instances where I need to filter out certain topics, etc.

Hi!

Is there any better way to filter RSS? Because for me this ad-on doesnt do its job.

I added the keyworlds but it let other news appear on the site, that doesnt contain any of them... :/

Not that I'm aware of. This wil import feeds if the keywords are anywhere in the feed.
So not just in the title but the world is anywhere in the text?

I want to import filtered news from a specific topic from multiple news sites.

No. What I’ve seen people do is import the feeds into a staff forum, then move the ones they want out into the public forum and trash the junk ones.

Thanks.

If I import it into an "article forum" does it effect the content?
Like some content would be missing just because it's not a discussion forum, but an article one?

I’ve no idea. I’ve not tried RSS feeds into a article. That would be something to try and report to XF if something is wrong.

I use article format and it looks awesome. It's just a display style, no content is changed.

You don't need a staff forum there a tick box in the rss feed to send to moderation ;).

Post immediately
Otherwise, messages will be placed into the moderation queue.

Use that setting + this add-on and + this one to set your publish date to current when you publish it:
You can fine tune your feed well! That's what I do.
