If you are going to use the logo on a dark background like that it makes it hard to read the black parts in the logo. I would say you would also need to make the black text and skull white to be able to see it.

Try lightening the whole of that crowd background image (mid-grey or slightly lighter) - it should make the logo 'pop' better and should also help to emphasise the borders of the user links box.

Yup - that works well with the darker header background.
In fact, it might be best to retain both - at some point you might want to do some T-shirts and the two logos (black/white) would cover pretty much any colour T you wanted to use!!
I have a live preview of Core up and running if you'd like to take a look. I actually changed the background from off-white, to the one I had with Fusion Gamer.
@Sheldon I would do something with the skull logo to use as the node icons that would look pretty cool. If you could do an animated one when their is new posts and non animated (the EQ bars) when there are no new posts.
