XF 2.2 No default thread leaves the title but not the post displayed

On one forum recently upgraded to XF 2.2.1, I am seeing this issue.

Note: I am still having some problems on that forum with custom style errors which I'm currently trying to fix, so this may be a style issue rather than an Xenforo issue.

What happens is that a member starts a new thread but when I go to view it I can't see it - all that is displayed is the thread title and the Quick Reply box.

Doing some troubleshooting, I have been able to determine that when this happens there is no thread type specified. When I edit the thread from the thread list, I am able to set it to Discussion and then it displays correctly

I’m fairly certain this will be related to outdated templates, badly merged templates, style issues or an add-on issue.

There are lots of template changes in the surrounding areas so this will require some basic troubleshooting including testing on an unedited default style (create a new style with no parent) and disabling all add-ons.
