Let's talk about 2.4 baby

First HYS Nov 2024, 2 year anniversary here we come.

the continued delays are bad, the ghosting when projections arent met makes it worse tho...

are we guessing Q1 2027 now? years late is one thing, but years late after the last one was years late and you promised that wouldnt happen again? or the whole story of it like oh we didnt want to delay 2.3 any longer so 2.4 will be quick and simple following shortly then 3.0 will be some expected lag like what ever happened with that? why cant xf hire more help or something, i think customers would nearly be willing to pitch in on that by now for all the problems this stuff causes....i mean months late, a year late etc ok...but years, plural, as a repeated pattern.......

so to effectively compete with social media has required a 10+ year wait or go custom half the software yourself, i really dont understand...XF is the leading forum software, why wont they act like it? why cant they see the incentives to give us something BOTH modern AND robust???

or what am i missing....besides a skilled therapist lol

If there is one thing to learn, don’t guess, set expectations or get hopes up. I’m sure XF has their reasoning why there is no development. Whether or not it’s good business, that is a different matter.

yeah i mean, when you choose a software platform in the first place there are reasons and you build some expectations off those reasons, of course the future is always uncertain...but then when someone(professional) tells you something straight to your face, there are reasonable expectations there as well...like at the very least, follow up when the thing you said, didnt happen....i dont understand what is unreasonable about expecting that.

its bad business that is for sure....unfortunately this is still somehow the leading option for a majority...i start feeling vbulletin PTSD triggers like they were the leaders for such a time and i never thought they would slip off that but wow what a mess that became....

from my perspective the lions share is still sitting on the table tho.....there is still not anything we can really use to compete with social media and once that exists, like something that actually works and doesnt feel like a fight to create content.. they will cement their position, and make a boatload of cash, for a time at least...

i really dont get it tho with all the AI advances and well intended deadlines what is the major obstacle to delay for entire yearssss....or why something more practical wasnt evolved into 2.3 in the first place for that matter....i guess they expected 2.4 would be a quick release but really what it feels like is a company that is caring less and less about even showing up to work...i dont see any reason social media should simply take over, there are plenty of people who loathe its existence, that work has to be done tho....

if id known 2.4 would have been over 2 entire years late, i may have had a custom bridge coded, but its way too late for that now we are just stuck in limbo being ignored

even in terms of damaging rep i mean they tell us stuff, we tell our communities, then it doesnt happen and we dont have answers it looks like we are the ones slacking and not caring etc...

anyway sorry i guess this thread is going for a diff vibe lol, its just upsetting more than exciting for us tbh

I've been quite vocal about the delays. But to be honest, I don't really care about delays on their own.

I'm way more concerned about the silence and the possible reasons behind it. I'm worried about the continuity of the company and what it will do to all the customers.

I don’t understand this. I am here as a forum admin. I read what the xenForo developers say in regard to what developments there may be in the pipeline, but the last thing I’m going to do is relay any of that to the forum community. What is to be gained by that I wonder?

for me its a project ive been working on since vb 3.7 and ive never been happy with it besides when vb3 was still hot...it ends up as years going on like ppl keep complaining and leaving because the intended functionality keeps being delayed...we are non profit supported by member donations so i have an obligation to be honest about whats going on and how i see things as things change etc....im practically reduced to an extended beta stage for years which people start to feel like will never change, and i can get to wonder it myself but if i at least had clear and accurate information i could make better choices regarding development and how to address my community.

its worse because this happened twice in a row too....so what happened was i was saying ok just wait 2.3 and i will do the custom work after and that version was years late, then when it did drop, it was right after that when they said about 2.4 and planning a quick release, changing their ways etc, and the new editor which would have invalidated any custom work i would have done......so yeah this is kind of dragging on for over 5 yrs for me here.....its a real work it out or fold it up kind of time atm.

fortunately the lag seems to created a space for third parties to continue working on 2.3 as if 2.4 is never coming so im getting back to work some at least but the editor lag is like a semi parked on train tracks

Me too

Me too. We are non profit, I don’t understand why that makes a difference to whether you need to tell your community what xenForo is planning to do. They seem to like what we have.

its mostly just because my plans, which is what effects my members and their plans most, depend on XF results and their results are 5yrs overdue but keep getting promised as any day now...im accepting support based on my dev plans and i dont expect things to be perfect but more than one year late, twice in a row, is kind of sh!tting the bed isnt it?

Same here.

100% with you on all these things.

I had to break my priorities into two plans:
  • the list of stuff we can do on 2.3 that hopefully won't break in the next version
  • the list of stuff we can do once we have 2.4

What's frustrating is that i had someone, part time, implement tiptap 3.0 months ago into our software and it just took 4 weeks... at that point we had no help from AI yet.. so let's call it 2-3 weeks now.

This is the only feature Xenforo has for us that makes a meaningful difference in 3 years, and not being communicative about the status of it, well, it reminds us exactly of what happened with our last forum vendor.

I'm surprised no one has used AI to improve XenForo's core. In a time like today, you wouldn't need to wait for development releases, you could just fork on what you have now and improve everything yourself. If there ever would be an update, just let AI compare the differences and work it in.

Not saying you should, just surprised no one has done it.

It's very hard to get AI to work on architectural type code ( Xenforo's core for example ) well.

It's very good at things around the edges or smaller scopes; you would think we'd see more of that.

Looks like the solution chosen by the team for their mediocre communication is to stop all communication altogether.
