Another thing I haven't seen mentioned is putting two browser windows side-by-side on a 1920x1080 monitor. Our fixed width size is 990px (and I don't see that increasing), which allows you to put two windows side-by-side without lose of content due to scroll bars.

And this has exactly what to do with the subject? Other than absolutely zero, of course. Or why are you trying to imply that flexible-width layouts would prevent me from using smaller browser windows?

Simply putting "fact" in front of something doesn't actually make it a fact.

I think the larger the res the less likely it is for people to maximize their browser window. Just speculating. If everyone was running 1920x1080 that doesn't mean your website should be 1920 pixels wide.

I have an OCD with maximising windows, I absolutely cannot browse a website without the browser being maximised, even if the actual website only fills half of it.

Switching to a 1280px fixed layout would prevent you from using two side-by-side windows.


Oh and considering that the OP never mentioned fluid/flexible styles, your post has what to do with this thread? Here I'll quote you...

This was discussed here a long time ago, and it seemed to bring out some very interesting responses in people. As I recall, someone compared me to Hitler for imposing a fixed width on my forum users.

But don't lose sight of the fact that making a line of text too long decreases its readability. The longer you make it, the less readable it is. That's why the pages of books aren't twice as wide as they are tall. Your forum probably shouldn't be either.
