XF 1.5 Improvements to notices

Today, we're showing you some exciting changes to Notices that we're bringing to you in XenForo 1.5:

Displaying an image

With the introduction of the above option it is now possible to display an image on a notice. You can either display the current visitor's avatar or provide a path or URL to one:

This addition should help draw more attention to your notices.

Visibility options

It is currently possible to hide notices with relative ease using some custom CSS. You can still do this to have tighter control, but the new option makes it even easier.

The exact breakpoints will depend on the properties set on the style used.

Floating notices

In XenForo 1.5 there are now two types of notices. Block notices behave in the familiar way as pictured above. Floating notices are a completely new way to display your notices.

Floating notices will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen. In addition to the usual options, floating notices also support some new options:

There are four colour styles, two of which derive from your Color Palette. You can also provide a custom class name to style the floating notice however you like. You can see all five of these options pictured below (the last one being a custom class created manually):

You can also control how long the floating notice will display for, and fade the notice in after a period of time.

Guest dismissal
We now give guests the opportunity to dismiss notices. For guests, the mechanism for dismissing a notice is to set a cookie in their browser.

The cookie that we set is valid for the current browsing session. To restore dismissed notices a guest can clear their cookies, move to another device or restart their browser.

Resetting notices

Sometimes it may be necessary to re-use a notice. For example, you may wish to create a similar notice without reconfiguring the criteria.

Once reset, the notice will begin to display to any registered member meeting the criteria, even if they previously dismissed it.

That's all for today, until next time... :)

Nice to see the functionality of the Notifications add-on from @Chris D has been added to Notices. :)

Can you confirm that all of the features from the Notifications add-on are now in Notices in 1.5? I'm guessing all of the criteria are there, but I'm unsure if these are included:

  1. Notification Center on the front end
  2. Time to hide notification when close is clicked (days) (basically the guest dismissal but for everyone) - I use this with most of my notifications with members
  3. Sticky floating notices (all of mine are sticky and are using with temporary dismissal)
  4. The various variables from the Notifications add-on to use in notices, such as {birthdays}

Ideally all of these are in. I can forego 1) if necessary but the others are quite important to me.

  1. No
  2. No
  3. Yes (set display duration to 0)
  4. No
All of the ones I said "No" to are pretty big features and would no doubt have been mentioned ;)

Again.....Summary of all new features: (XF 1.5)

  1. Responsive admin control panel
  2. Profile post comments can now be reported
  3. Soft deleting profile post comments
  4. They can be undeleted (if soft deleted)
  5. The Ability to like profile post comments
  6. The Ability to search profile post comments
  7. They also appear in the news feed
  8. They can be approved/unapproved
  9. Profile post comments have always been subject to spam checks, but now they have support for the moderation queue rather than blocked completely.
  10. Moderator actions on profile post comments are now logged in the Moderator Log
  11. Warnings can be issued on comments
  12. And you can trigger the spam cleaner from a comment and the comments can be soft deleted (and restored) via the spam clean process.
  13. Ability to disable trophies globally
  14. Threads with the latest posts in the sidebar
  15. Independent language selector for the Admin CP
  16. Resend a user's email confirmation from the Admin CP

That's a shame.

It looks like Notifications will still have some uses then after all.
It makes little sense to me that you add this functionality to core yet leave all the main functions out. I hope the core can be turned off so those wishing to use the original one can still benefit from those functions not included in the core.

If people want to carry on using my Notifications add-on then they can. There'd be nothing to stop you from doing that. You could even use both.

Just because an entire add-on isn't replicated doesn't mean it's not a solid improvement or implementation. There's some solid functionality being included. I like the floating notifications a lot better. Sure more features would be nice but I think that's a little rough of a response.

Plus some people who are using the add-on may not be taking advantage of all of the features so the new stock feature capabilities, even though they don't mimic the add-on, will still be enough for them to switch to the new stock features and eliminate another add-on.
