I have a hard time inviting dudes to my site.

Would it be possible to include the ability to upload a thumbnail for each category, as well as uploading a thumbnail for a bet. For instance, letting peeps upload a NBA logo for the NBA category. Would it also be possible to upload a thumbnails for an event, such as Knicks vs Lakers, we can upload the logo or a funny picture of the team mates. I also asked this on your site just now since this thread is too random to remember the suggestion from.

Category management is all done via the back end. One of the enhancements that I am adding is the ability to have a Category Icon that would replace the Bookies Avatar on the Events Listing views, Sidebar Modules, User tabs etc. It won't replace the Bookies Avatar on the Event Page itself. If a Category doesn't have a Icon, the Bookies avatar will be used on the listings instead (like it is now). That is all the farther I plan on taking that. I won't be adding an "users" type image uploading at all. If you want something like that, you will need to have someone do some customization for you.

It's a very odd problem to have isn't it? I mostly post on forums that are don't have a lot of chicks, so this is pretty weird for me.
I would think so too.

Women don't have the habit to disagree like us men do. So they're good on giving their comments and points of view, but they typically don't disagree much and as such, don't debate much either.

When we do have a man join, it's funny though to see (watch) how intimidating it is to be ganged up on by a bunch of women. LOL

I find that only the strong survive.

Not saying you are wrong for your experiences (and your own site) however, I totally disagree with this from my own first hand experience. One of my Big Boards (65k+ users 4+Mil posts) is 99% women (its a womens health & lifestyle site). They argue more than any mens site that I've ever been on or am a part of. I thought dudes discussing Sports and Politics was bad but it doesn't come close to women on women flame wars (totally relentless). They disagree ALL THE TIME and they also tend to debate very well while covering a pretty broad spectrum of topics beyond the scope of the site. They also BLOG more than any male dominant site that I've been a part of. Again, this is my own first hand experience, not an opinion or guess. I understand that it can be different at other places.

Something to hopefully look forward to as my site grows. :D

That doesn't sound like women at all.

Dog gone it.

Yeah I wouldn't tell the members to stop posting off topic threads, keeps them engaged. Our Off Topic forum/section is the second most popular forum. Heck if I remember right our Off Topic sections account for 25-30% of the total stats.

That's really not OK. I hate it when I join an ontopic forum (on a niche I am interested in) and see most of the posts are in the chat area. If you run a web development forum, a sports community or whatever, you need to focus your members on the ontopic categories. And you can do this by not giving the offtopic too much attention. I have very few topics in the chat area and I personally don't encourage posting there. The area doesn't increase post count either, so the members are not enticed to chat. And by opening new threads in the ontopic sections, you can drag their attention there.

Out of curiosity, if you despise Off Topic threads so much why do you even have an Off Topic section?

A few reasons why we have an off topic section:
People tend to get burned out talking about ontopic threads and this helps to keep them engaged.
If a member wants to discuss something off topic and aren't allowed to on your site, they'll just do it on another website/forum. I don't know about you but I'd rather keep them on my site.

I have added it just so that I don't make an 'exception'. If you look at my link you'll see it's a pretty anemic section and I have no interest in filling it. I don't despise it altogether, i dislike seeing people use this to increase their post count only to then brag about how big their stats are. It bothers me since they'll ask for bigger advertising price, thinking that the counting games and other useless junk actually works as content :D

Not to mention that, if I am to buy a forum or consider taking it over, seeing that most of the content is 'junk' will surely make me either drop the price a lot or stop bothering. As long as you have enough on-topic stuff and start new threads daily, people shouldn't be bored. I'd like to think my members are on my site to discuss about forum management and share their ideas, not just to chat about who's beaten Rihanna lately. Yes, a general chat is OK, just as the welcome area is, so that new members can 'immerse' easier in the community. But having most your content there is not a good idea, if you're working on a certain niche.

But we're taking the thread so offtopic. My apologies to the initial poster ;)

You have a few good points but I guess it depends on your forum niche and member base, it's not one size fits all. You're right I wouldn't create off topic threads on a forum admin/webmasters forum. However if you have a forum where majority of the members personally know at least one other member, you tend to hang out more and build a relationship with other members (Create off topic threads as you value their feedback/opinion).

It's almost a year later and I've discovered the root of my problem, which is well-documented here. The problem is that I was not inviting normal dudes to my site. I was inviting nerds like myself. Now I have to reorganize the sites I visit into a bookmarks folder called Nerds since the dudes I talk to obviously don't know how or are willing to socialize with females unless it involves a porn or cam site or fawning over a videogame/manga/anime attention-whore nerd chick. I should've realized this was the root of the problem from the very beginning. Lesson well-learned.

This thread confuses me.

I also don't know how to invite people either. I built it and they came. I wish the growth rate was a little slower. I was told I was doing everything wrong to get members.

Nerds rule the world. They just haven't figured it out yet. Give them a chance, because if they're just young nerds, they'll get over that talking to girls thing in time. What you need is a few older nerds. I joined your site a year or so ago, but it changed names three times, and I'm pretty sure I forgot what it was called for about six months. So that could be a factor, too.

Interestingly, half of all my users are invisible, and seldom post anything in any section. But I'm told that could just be me.

The OP is confused too so you are not alone.
