Huddler forum software

One of my favourite sites Avsforum.com has gone to Huddler and I find it trying to do too much.
I'm sorry to hear that. I was an active member on a vb3 site that went to Huddler, damn near destroyed them. They ended up switching back after 3-4 months of steady declines. It's a few years later now and they still aren't back to the level they were at before.

Huddler tried to recruit my site to their platform. After hearing feedback from site owners who had moved to it and reading user feedback at overclockers and other sites, I decided against it.

Seeing what's happening to AVS makes me want to cry. Just seeing the thread titles in that forum make me want to vomit as a site owner. And then I looked at their Alexa traffic numbers...

I've never used Huddler either as an admin or as a user - so would someone mind explaining what's so bad about it? :)

Maybe they would have been better off by choosing Xenforo.

I've visited huddler.com and really have no idea how anyone converts to them. To my knowledge they do not have a link anywhere to download (if free) or purchase (if paid).

I'm sure it is somewhere, but the hell if I know where.

Huddler is a hosted service. You do not download their software.

From what I understand is that you go into a partnership with them, they host your site (on their platform) and take care of all of the tech problems..... in exchange for a cut of the ad revenue.

Well there is a dumb move on their part.

You basically lose ownership of your site and it is completely dependent on Huddler.

You don't lose ownership and can always move off. The move is made for financial reasons. You no longer have to worry about hosting or maintaining the code of the site. Plus Huddler does not take any of the income that you made before you made the switch. They simply take a cut of any increase that they provide after the move.

With that said, its not for me.

Not for me either.

Uncensored community with some mild nudes (not porn), which has a mild fondness for patriotism, activism, and a high standard of freedom of speech and information.

We'd be luck if we lasted a few days. :p

That's not exactly how it was explained to me. They wanted ownership of my site, or at least a majority stake.

Then you'd be the only one. I was contacted by them a while ago too. This was over a year ago now. I had a few very long phone calls with them. One being with Alejandro and the other being with one of the Co-Founders, I forget his name now. But from what I remember now, you keep 100% of the net income you are making now (net because they will be taking over the server expenses) and then anything above that, you share something like 40/60, maybe even worse than that. But I specifically asked if I would retain ownership and what would happen if I wanted to move off, they said I still would own the site and if I wanted to, I could move away from their platform.

They also take over all the hosting headaches, sysadmin work, bug fixes, error fixes, forum upgrades, modification creation, etc. It sounds like a dream...until you actually use their platform. It's slow thanks to the js and ads. They don't support older browsers (apparently it's even more slow and doesn't load half the contents) because of the js.

From what I've heard, they can get people to your site, but they can't keep people on it.

I chose xF over Huddler and am glad I did. I just wish I could hire an ad sales team like they have lol Then I'd be rockin!

If I was having my mid-life crisis and wanted to relive some of my glory days then I might be seriously pressed to go with Huddler, but anyone in their right mind would not sign away their website and choose to go to the most bloated, distracting, aesthetically annoying software on the face of the Internet.

There is certainly a case to be made for services which allow important forums to "go on" if and when the owners decide to move on or retire. As it stands, there are a few models like IB and the other big one (I forget their name, but they are like a smaller IB)....and now huddler and then some of the folks here and others who claim to buy or takeover forums.

In fact, I've had some ideas concerning this for years and have held myself back from starting yet another venture!

So the idea itself is not a bad one - as usual, it will be the implementation which may make the case or ruin it.

I don't think there is anything to gain, but much to lose.....from an active forum with admins and owners who don't mind the workload, moving to such a service.

I'm still not sure what my succession plan is! I've been doing it for 17 years now and someday will likely "call it a day".
