Galleria: The Basics

As long as I have databases to create importers for, I can write an importer.
The importer should be a professional feature. People should pay for importing.

Here's my explaination on why it'll be free:
1. Charging for a product gives a sense of 'required support' and development.
Spell it out for people what you would be willing to support and what time frame.
3. I can develop and give support, but it wouldn't be to a standard I feel someone should pay for
Charge $10. Do the support on your forums.
(support wise, release schedule, etc. Quality won't be affected)
That would cost $100-$500.
4. I don't have the time to manage licenses / piracy.
Make it easy then.

== Costs ==
Basic $10.
Forum Support $10/year.
Over 1000 photos $20.
Importer $20.

Make it easy then.

Thats confusing

Basic Gallery $10. or Large (>1000 images)Gallery $20.
Forum Support $10/year.
Extra fees: Importer $20.

I don't know exact numbers.
I just think lots of people want a SUPER GOOD gallery.
I think everyone paying a bit, isn't alot to ask.

For these small things, no one is expecting the "World" for support.
King K should easily be able to "refund" the money if the gallery doesn't work for a site ... and he thinks the support is too much.

Not that I wouldn't love getting paid for this, even if I charged you $1 for the gallery, I feel like that support is a priority. To me, that's something I cannot provide (unless I get volunteers, which I would feel even worse about them doing it). I will probably provide a brand-free option for some point that may give you some beta access or something. I may also out source importers by building an importer framework where someone writes their own class to provide data to a generic importer (say Title, etc.)

And no offense, but even I was a little confused on your pricing system.

There ya go. Have a year long beta, and charge $20 for beta access. heh.

not sure why you keep hammering on this, the guy doesnt want to charge for it, he keeps saying it and you keep going on. No offense, I tried to word it without sounding rude but you know the internet, it always comes off as rude. lol

People want me to charge for it so that I have an incentive to keep it going, rather than writing it, losing interest, and leaving it.

I want what everyone else wants. A great gallery.

KingK is great. Hard working family man. Makes some great code. Is making some needed stuff for free - see BBCode Manager.
I want him to feel some financial love as he works hard to make a great gallery.
Sure, @$20/gallery that is only $2000 for 100 customers. So not that much money.
But as xenforo grows, maybe he'll get more customers.
Maybe Galleria will get competition from XenPhotopost ... so $20 vs. $149 ....

For the sake of $20 don't people want a great gallery ?
Don't people want to encourage Xenforo developers ?

I see alot of Xenforo customers $140, wanting their vBGallery Photo Gallery $149 up and running on Galleria tomorrow. (spent $289)
I'm sure alot of vBGallery admins would have some money for Galleria.
I think a fair conversion of vBGallery to Galleria is $49 (1/3 the cost of vBGallery).

A gallery is a MAJOR ADDON.
Don't people want the best MAJOR ADDONs possible ?

If all users had their own "Image Gallery" .... it might be nice to have convenient "Save to" buttons ... forinstance ... see .jpg

That wouldn't be too hard to accomplish, but won't be seen until at least v1.1 as that's my intended user-only albums to be created.

Yes, the gallery may be the most important addon right after the forum software. The $20 is not much for a gallery. But frankly, I would prefer this important addon to be offered from xenforo because I know that they will try to stick around for a while which is very important if you have an active community.

By the way, maybe you can get some UI ideas from IPB. They are just about to release their new Gallery version which is real cool.

One area PP and others have had trouble with is Mass Uploads.
If I have gallery called July 4th and my users dump their cameras to upload, there is always some confusion on how to do it and/or it's not an option.
Which brings in another prob with PP...
Categories...
I typically start my galleries with the year...
2009, 2010 etc...
Then I allow users to submit pictures in the year.
But I usually have to create the category first, then they upload.
It would be nice for the user's to be able to create a category and upload in a simple UI.
In PP is a wacky set of menus and such...

[FEATURE]
Ok, this is stretching it a bit - but....
Mobile capable? :) LOL

[LESSONS LEARNED]
Mass uploads - if uploading errors... Have a method to remove previously upload pictures since the users typically start all over again and wind up with dups.

Resizing... Not sure of the best way to handle this since most users will upload a set of 50 5meg pictures and wonder why it times out. I usually recommend BiMP.

Renaming/sorting Sometimes - esp with PP and mass uploading, the pictures get renamed.
It would be nice, especially if the pictures are renamed prior to uploading - to be able to sort / tag the pictures by their file name and/or picture titles...

I'll be sticking around. I personally hate IPB's UI. I don't know why, but I never really like their software. Its nothing against them, I just don't like them... :( But, honestly, I welcome the competition! Knowing my caliper of skill vs. that of Mike + Kier, I'm pretty much beat already, but that doesn't mean I won't put out a quality product! They just have 1000000000000x more skill than I do. :)

Let's just say, you'll be thoroughly surprised at how well thought out the UI for uploading is. I think you'll all be in love with it! However, creating categories will be an admin-only feature for v1.0. I may add a permission in v1.1 to allow creation of categories while uploading, but the scope of v1.0 has been pretty much decided. I hope Kier doesn't mind, but we had talked the UI a bit and he liked it. ;)

You got me interested. (: When you are ready with your galleria addon, will there be a testsite where we could test the addon? Or even better, will the addon be installed here at xenforo?
