[ForumApps] Native Mobile Apps for XenForo [Deleted]

XF Staff -
This app developer is using an automated posting bot to spam XF forums asking them to adopt his plugin. My server logs verify it's automated.

His bot submitted the contact form on one of my sites 6 times, 2 times on another. All with the same boilerplate message:

I will not buy from a spammer ever, and in my opinion, they do not deserve to be in XF's resource listings if this is how they do business.

I respect your opinion of never buying from a spammer but most of our new customers do not have the time to visit XenForo daily and check for new resources. We are just helping make people aware about the ways they can increase engagement.

FYI, your server logs are incorrect, we do not have a bot posting these messages. It is me and my team that are going through some of the forums we feel might be a good fit for using ForumApps and if you think you're not a good fit, please feel free to send me the links to your forums and I will ensure you do not ever receive a single piece of communication from us in the future.

I've learned in business over the years when I make a mistake, admit it and tell my client how I'll correct it.

If this is true, then whatever means you used to obtain a list of XF sites to contact was never properly vetted by a human:

thexxxxxforums.com - this is my "site 1".
The below sites 301 redirect to site 1:
xxxxxyyyyyyyforum.org
xxxxxyyyyyyyforums.org
xxxxxforum.org
xxxxxforums.org
xxxxxyyy.org
xxxxxzzzzzzz.org
Each of these received a contact form submission, even though it's all the same site! A human would have spotted that.

xxx.com - this is my "site 2"
The below sites 301 redirect to site 2:
xxxracer.com
xxxxxxreborn.com
The same thing happened here!

No need, I've blocked your IP.

I've marked your sites which start with
Code:
tu***
and we won't contact you again.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused. We contacted you because your forum had more than 1 million posts.

This app developer is using an automated posting bot to spam XF forums asking them to adopt his plugin. My server logs verify it's automated.

His bot submitted the contact form on one of my sites 6 times, 2 times on another. All with the same boilerplate message:
Thanks for looking into this; I got it 7 times this morning and was about to go digging into my server to see if it burped and resent the same thing to me multiple times.

Sorry about that. I've asked my team to stop from contacting anyone.

Received as well and IP banned now. Was planning to make the move from Tapa Talk but I won't be switching now when hockey season kicks in. Even Tapa Talk wouldn't stoop to this level. If he solicits XF powered sites like this. I hate to imagine what he might do with my personal information if I purchased services. I will be strongly recommending to all my clients to avoid doing business with this spammer.

Seriously? It's a little bit of overly aggressive marketing, for which he has now apologised and said he would cease the continued practice. It's not exactly comparable to some of the crap TapaTalk has pulled in the past.

It's a shame a more conservative and human curated approach wasn't taken to avoid the duplicate messages and therefore impression of spamming. We need apps like this to take off so that the developers are getting enough money in continue funding the development of new features at a faster rate.

Honestly, I didn't mind the first one because I've been following this thread anyway. It was getting the 2nd, and 3rd, and 4th, and so on duplicate message that annoyed me since at that point I didn't know if somebody was purposely doing it or if my server was acting up. Plus getting these between 2:30AM -7:40AM local time makes me a bit grumpy as I do pay attention to my emails through the night as I need to respond if it is my 'day job' reaching out to me.

So it wasn't a bad idea, just badly executed. ;)

Thanks for the feedback. We have ceased doing this, even though some of the biggest forums running XenForo have appreciated our way of reaching out to them and have become our customers now.

SPAM is SPAM regardless of how much you try to sugar coat it. Hopefully more report it to Spamhaus just like we did. Receiving it once might be aggressive marketing but 5 times of the same duplicate message along with waking up to several client SPAM reports that they received several duplicate messages from someone trying to solicit a XenForo service is SPAM.

Point made and lessons learned so let’s not labour the point and move on.

If anyone wants to check it out:

Feel free to look for RpNation in the app store for my site rpnation.com

We were one of the first customers and support is great :).
