Food Fantasia

Damn I misread the title at first as Anything as long, as it's covered in chocolate and wondered how could I have missed a pervie thread with that many posts, over 2000. Mr. Mind-in-the-gutter soon realized which thread it was though, it has pointed out those that have similar minds to mine. ;)

Nothing wrong with minds being in the gutter as long as you don't fall to the sewer ;)

No Title change today :'(

I made some Hot Cross Buns which turned out great, but had a disappointing lack of spice and fruit, next time I will can the old school recipe and make one up myself, with a ton more of both!!! I made some with no fruit and choc chips for my son, he seemed to like those as they were gone very quickly! :p

My daughter made some chocolate chip cookies last Saturday evening. This may sound odd, but I tried something that made a very subtle difference: cane sugar. Most of the sugar around here is beet sugar, but the store we shop at has cane sugar under its own store brand. The cookies are just a little less sweeter. The next time I make frosting, I'm going to try to track down some powdered cane sugar. It's not easy to find, but it's out there.

It's like the difference between U.S. Pepsi, Pepsi Throwback and Mexican-bottled Pepsi; only the last one is made with cane sugar like in the old days, and there is a big difference. Same with the Coke.

I use cane sugar as often as possible. It is more expensive, but very much worth it.
If your child has ADHD, you'll see a difference in their behavior, guaranteed.

I've heard about diet and the effect it has on behaviors. There is merit to it. :) I don't get much in the way of sugary foods here--usually diet sodas, and I even keep the caffeine tucked away.

We ONLY have cane sugar in Australia, as we grow it here, beet sugar is non-existant.

I generally try to use what is called Raw Sugar, which is basically unprocessed dried cane sugar juice..

Eh I tried the gluten-free diet with him for almost a year and didn't see any noticeable change. But when we changed from refined sugar to cane sugar, and cut red dye out of his diet, the change was remarkable.

Holy **** this thread is huge......and I have no idea what it's about.

FOOD!

Food, Eating, and lately we are mostly talking about the Title Changes - Kier has been having fun changing the title of this thread..

It was Originally Dragonfly's Delectable Discussion

Then it became in sequence...

NomForo
Luk at all Dis Fud
Eat Me! (lots of silliness ensued after this name change)
What's that in your mouth?!?!
Anything, so long as it's covered in Chocolate

We await with bated breath what next shall be the name of this fine thread!

Ok then.....

I think "Food" in the title would help. I'm just sayin'. - Enjoy

Peggy- Glad your son is doing better on cane sugar and red dye. Interesting..

BTW - I don't eat a lot of sweets, but dark chocolate rules.

Its been modified several times as an on-going joke.

Originally it was easily food related, now it isn't.

I believe it. That is one reason I try to make as much as I can at home from raw ingredients. I also don't get this whole obsession these companies have with dye in foods. At my house across town, the previous owners had off-white berber carpeting in the dining area, and the older kidlet got some of that Chef Boyardee sauce on it. That stuff is loaded with so much dye, it's sickening. I ended up using straight Clorox 2 on a rag and got it out. I can only imagine how much that dye pickles the brain.

I do say the Sunday Sauce I make is a nice red/orange color, and it's all natural, baby! :D

Don't get me started on HFCS either. We have to be the only country in the world where choice of sweetener depends on political policy...

I have seen "raw sugar" locally. Some restaurants offer it in packets as a sweetener.

Sugar is very political in the U.S. The government wants us to support corn growers, so a lot of (most?) mass-market products are sweetened with that unhealthy HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). Even good ol' Heinz Ketchup. I know a lot of consumers are clueless on it, but since I discovered the difference in flavor several years ago, I've avoided buying most products that use it. It is very noticeable in carbonated beverages, even to those who don't drink them often. HFCS is very "sickly sweet" in comparison to sugar and leaves a weird aftertaste or feeling in the mouth.
