How would i go about this?

There is no automatic usergroup promotion yet so it would either have to be a manual process or you could install this add-on: http://xenforo.com/community/threads/trophypromo-trophy-based-user-group-promotions.9847/

Set the basic group to the moderation queue, and the next group after 5 posts to normal posting.

Unregistered / Unconfirmed -> Moderation -> Registered

Set the usergroup permission Follow message moderation rules to Not Set (No) for the group you want to pre-moderate.

So you will need 2 groups - the standard registered group which will have it set to Not Set (No).
The you will need your second promoted group which will have it set to Allow.

Then with the add-on you automatically add members into the second group once they have made 5 posts.

Ok i have created a new user-group called moderation. with moderation rules set to no.

All new members automatically go into the registered usergroup so that is the one you will have to set to pre-moderation.

Yes, you can do that if you wish.
The usergroup names aren't actually used anywhere outside the ACP but it will help you to keep track of which is which.

What? I'd have thought this was a basic requirement! Bah, something else that needs to be in XF before we can look to move

We use it for the exact reason of this thread, moderating the first few posts of a member.
