Does Xenforo need a Sitemap or not?

Don't discount Bing, just because it may return some Google results. Bing is actually pretty good for searching some porn you can't find through google search cause of chilling effects. Bing is also the search engine on the xbox 360.

I say the answers are both yes and no....

No, google does not need one - and XF does not need one.

BUT, it's just possible if you create an entirely new area of your site with many pages and slow traffic, that submission of one to Goog and Bing will help them find it faster.

It is true that goog runs the web these days. In some ways, I wish it were not true, but no other SE is close in providing the intelligence. It's easy to copy hardware, but much harder to copy complicated intelligence...

I have no issues myself glazing up my future forum a bit...
So i have no issues installing a sitemap or adding pretty urls...
I just do not think it will be a major overall impact for success, as
long as it is not a draw back, then I have no problems adding them....

porn? who is setting up a porn site? Even though a porn site can bring traffic, I consider
porn sites low quality traffic, as we all know what they are after, and in order to turn
a profit or a dime, then you probably need massive amount of traffic....

btw, chilling effects is not there to detour porn sites, if you are on chilling
effects, then someone has filed a DMCA complaint against you, and
you did not respond to the complaint to take action to remove illegal content.

You have "Adult ads" in your sig

that is true, but, there can be a big difference between an adult site, and a porn site....
I have seen big board adult sites that do not contain a lick of porn, and I have seen
adult sites that contain adult discussions, and have porn...I have no plans in setting up
a 100% porn site, however, mainly adult mature discussions that you would not
discuss on a general type non-adult related forum or setting....

take backpage for instance, nothing in their domain name leads you to think
they have an adult area, but they do, take my domain name, at first glance
you thought it would be a porn site, but I plan to have non-adult areas also....
95% of backpage is non-adult; so 90-95% of my site will be adult nature....
maybe 10% of my site can be about porn, but it will not be all porn....

You have "Adult ads" in your sig

Be that as it may, spam is highly concentrated in Google and makes it hard to find certain things, that's why some people prefer to use other search engines.

Because spammers go where the party is, why would a spammer show up to a dead yahoo party...
Spammer goes like bummer man, I am going over to google, where the action is....

My understanding is that sitemaps are something that was need a very long time ago to aid search engines and is not needed or wanted any longer.
It's still recommended today. In fact, there are a few options in Google/Bing that ask for your sitemaps. When you create a new site in webmaster tools, Google asks for your sitemaps first. So, I'd venture to say it's required.

Never had one on my site.

Google and other search engines have no problems at all indexing content.

Then why do sitemaps still have their own dedicated section in WebmasterTools?

Because it's a leftover from when sites did not have a proper hierarchal layout and proper semantics in terms of the menus and breadcrumb paths, etc.

Really. No need for one.

Is it required? No.

Can it be helpful? Sure. Every bit helps and the whole world does not technically depend solely on Google (thought it is the #1 search page).

Would it be cool to have it as a default feature? Maybe. But this is where add-ons may shine better, being they can also incorporate the support for other add-ons. Though a basic option would be nice for those without add-ons and who only use the core.

Another vote for absolutely not needed. If your site has orphaned pages (no links to them that Googlebot can find normally), you need to rethink your entire site, not generate a sitemap.

I've never had a sitemap for any site... ever. Simply not needed.

I think you misunderstand the function and purpose of chillingeffects.org. It is a repository of DMCA takedown notices and cease and desist letters and other forms of legal threats and actions along with commentary (on the interesting stuff). The point I believe they are trying to make is that it may be far too easy to enforce defacto censorship on the Internet using legal threats and tactics.

For example, any time Google removes data from their search results they send the legal requests that caused the removal to chillingeffects.org.

Right, and DMCA notices are often filed on sites that in fact do not contain any illegal content. Just two examples of many of how ridiculous it can get:

^ This.

Just to give you an idea of the crazy DMCA notices we have gotten over the years....

1) My own name. Someone tried arguing that I can't use the name, Adam or Adam Howard because it was their trade mark (or that my own comments were reflecting poorly on them, because we happen to have the same name). And before you think they were just trolling, they actually had an actual attorney office forward me a letter in certified mail.

2) Anonymous logo. We used to use the anonymous logo, which no one owns. The one we used was even something we made ourselves.

3) Screen name. I have had several people try to claim their screen name was a registered trademark.

This is only a few which I've laughed at over the years.
