XF 1.4 Do spam phrases match exact words?

I know that regular expressions will match whatever I send to it, but will non-regex Spam Phrases match exact words or any text that includes those characters? The documentation is ambiguous.

For instance, if I block "walk"
Will it also block: walking, walked and walks? Or just "walk"?

You can use * as a wildcard, so in the example above you would enter walk*.
