Is there a way to enable the rich-text editor for XFMG's description field?

The short answer is basically no, not without custom development. Only basic/automatic formatting is available in this location.

You could create a custom field that uses rich text to expand on this though.

This is what we have set up here as an example in the “caption” field. It’s just a rich text custom field.
