I'm not sure what you mean @Daniel-SP.

Can you do a mock up or try and explain it in a different way?

Sure ! Firstly, let me show how I think it could be done:

  • The "featuring" mark works as the addon usually does
  • The screen that we associate thread prefixes to forum nodes would have an option to mark which of the featured threads would appear inside each thread marked with that specifc prefix. (In case of multi prefixes or multi featured threads associated, the addon should use the same random criteria to show anyone of them)
Now, comming back to samples, I will try to add more details on the one I gave before:

Suppous that I have 2 different forum nodes: "Teams" and "Events"

"Teams" got the thread that has all the discussion about Barcelona, Real Madrid, etc.. teams and then Barcelona is going to have a match with Real Madrid, and then any member create a thread on "Events" node about this match.

As explained above, I would have already marked both discussion threads as "Featured" and associated each team dicussion thread to each prefix. When a user create the thread related to the match and select both prefixes, The addon will list them and randomly show to the visitors of the thread.

Second example:

A forum based on headphones got two sections:
  • A section based on branding ( Samsung, SkullCandy, etc) that will contain only topics related to bands discussion, not products
  • A section based on products. So when the members are about to create a thread about any headphone, he must select the brand of it as a prefix.
By defining the general branding discussions as featured threads, when the user create a thread talking about a specific samsung headphone, the addon ( after the proper associations) will show on that specific thread the discussion topic about the samsung brand.

Much more than providing interations between threads and discussion, this could reduce even more the bounce rate, since if someone reachs the community from Search Engines looking for the match or a specific headphone model, he can be leaded to a main discussion and wider thread.

I gave only two examples but I think that there's no subject that can't be helped with this kind of dynamic.

Sorry for my bad english.. I just can't undestand prepostitions and some other language points.. hehe.

If you need any further example, let me know and I will try with other cases.

Just a fast third example about this community:

Imagine how great it would be if someone opens a thread with any doubt about "Permissions" and by selecting "permissions" as a prefix, the addon could put the permission's help page as featured for everyone that visists the thread?

Regards,

Daniel

I'm sorry but I just don't understand.
I've read it several times but I have no clue what it is you are suggesting.

You keep mentioning "the featured threads would appear inside each thread".
Do you really mean thread?
Why would a Featured Thread appear inside a thread?

Why would a Featured Thread appear inside a thread?

Why would a Fatured Thread appear anywhere ? I understand that by using this feature, we want to attract users to specific threads. This suggestion is simply directing the user by his interest (by viewing Samsung XYZ model thread, we might think that he would like to check the Official Samsung discussion thread that sometimes we wont even know that it exists)

So you do actually want Featured Threads to appear inside threads?

And what would the criteria be for placing each one in single/multiple threads?

If it's featured, it will appear at the top of the thread list, which presumably is where the other related thread will be.

So you do actually want Featured Threads to appear inside threads?.
Yeah. Its kinda like a "related" thread function but not automatic like usually.. just based on admin interest ( the main reason of the addon, I guess).

And what would the criteria be for placing each one in single/multiple threads?
Considering that you asked if I have more than one thread to show, the criteria would be the same as its nowadays that we have many featured threads and you get any of them to show.

The association with a Thread prefix would happen in: Applications > Thread Prefixes > Thread Prefix Name > Forums and Permissions .. With a multi-select box with the avaliable and already marked featured threads to choose

Unfortunately I don't think that's something which would ever make it in.
It's too niche and you're the first person who has suggested it.
OK.. there's always a first request :p

About the niche, its applicable for any forum hat works with prefixes, I think.

I know I keep asking but any thoughts yet on allowing this to parse the first image in a thread and display it rather than stripping it?

Nothing has changed since my last post on the subject.

I have a few ideas related to being able to use an image instead of the avatar.
I'm not going to promise anything though so that's as much as I'm going to say for now.

Unless you mean images in the content?
In which case that is unlikely to happen.

I'd have to say that, at least in my case, I wouldn't use this feature. I'm not convinced at how noticed Featured Threads would be at the top of a thread - you'd have to catch the thread early on for users to see this, otherwise they'd just be using the new posts link to see unread threads. Frankly, I don't have time either to decide within individual threads which other threads to feature.

Personally I like Featured Threads the way it is - quick and easy to feature threads and get them to display in various places across the forums without me having to think too hard about it. :)

I mean that currently if there's an image in a post I believe you strip the BBCode tags out and prevent the image from displaying? If the image could be displayed it'd make this addon extremely useful for us and I think you said previously you'd consider it.

That requires a rewrite of the code, templates and CSS, so although I haven't ruled it out completely, it's unlikely.

If the Style Property to show the avatar/icon is enabled, the default image will be the avatar, unless an icon is uploaded.
So out of the box, the icons will be the same size as the avatar.

However, there are separate SPs and CSS classes, so they could be made any size, depending on how the code works - I haven't got that far yet.
