Canadian hosting recommendations - tired of incompetent support

CanSpace thinks they know better than XenForo about their own code. Unbelievable arrogance. I appreciate your replies, guys. I'll keep you posted as to my new host.

European privacy law is not going to be applied to a Canadian resident on a Canadian site.
Agreed but I was wondering why it be applied to a Canadian resident on a Canadian site hosted in the UK (which incidentally is not in the EU but has its own version of GDPR) Or are you saying if a Canadian site is hosted outside Canada, then it’s no longer Canadian?

I have assumed that a Canadian site, hosted in Canada, is still subject to EU regulations in regard to an EU audience and paying EU tax on downloads sold to EU customers.

Probably, but with only one member from the UK, it's not an issue I am too worried about. And, frankly, I am not selling anything. No store, no premium memberships, no advertising. Which largely keeps me off of most regulatory radar. It's just a small community of regulars and the odd visitor who stays (including that UK member). The only reason I don't take it private is that I know we have some old members lurking.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for Canadian hosting company recommendations for my XenForo forum. I've been having a nightmare experience with multiple hosts and need advice from actual XenForo users.

My situation:My forum has been getting "Too many connections" database errors. When I contacted XenForo support, Paul was very clear:

  • First response: "That is a server limitation. You will need to contact your host and ask them to increase the limit."
  • After my host denied it was their issue: "I suggest you switch hosts. This is a hosting issue and nothing related to XF."

Hosts I've tried with terrible results:

  • CanSpace: Claimed it was a XenForo configuration issue, argued with XenForo's own diagnosis
  • HostPapa: Support rep said "I can guess" about their own services and admitted they don't use connection pooling
  • 4GoodHosting: Told me to "open a support ticket" instead of answering basic pre-sales questions
  • Canadian Web Hosting: Chat has character limits that prevent asking detailed technical questions

What I need:A Canadian hosting company that:

  • Understands database connection limits and can increase them when needed
  • Has technically competent support staff
  • Can provide specific details about MySQL configurations
  • Won't deflect XenForo issues back to XenForo when it's clearly hosting-related

Has anyone found a Canadian host that actually knows what they're doing with XenForo? I'm willing to pay more for competent service at this point.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!
Hi Jim,

We currently have servers in USA and Canada and will be happy to provide you web hosting. You can ask for reviews to @creativeforge, @HotRodCarts, @oxrageous and @BlueGreen91 who have been customers since a few years ago.

You're generally not going to see larger hosting companies increase connections for a shared hosting platform. Every time the number of connections increases, so does the maximum memory requirements of MySQL, and this can lead to one site to monopolizing server resources.

I run my 3 forums and all my other website on OVH. Never had any major issues with them. My biggest forum has nearly 60k posts and nearly 3k members, still on shared hosting.
