Better separation of add-ons by version

this is the SMF download area As you can see you can filter by compatible version and above all there are all the old versions released over the years and each version specifies which version of SMF it is compatible with.

Now on xf if a mod has been updated to version 2.3 I who use 2.2 can no longer download it.

If only custom fields had value in being able to be filtered/searched.

I would like to be able to search custom fields and also to be able to filter on custom fields.
There are a lot of situations where this would be very handy. In some cases it would allow us to merge forums and just use custom fields instead.

For example: in the bug reports forums here there is a custom field for XF version.
It would be handy if you could search or filter for all bugs for a specific version.

Additionally: it could be taken a step further and make the custom field hotlinked to the search. So to take the example of XF version field, you could add a field for 'fixed version'...

That's nonsense.

Right now many Add-ons that are compatible with 2.3 are also compatible with 2.2.

If an Add-on released here (might be different for Add-ons hosted on external URLs) is updated to a new version that is only compatible with 2.3 you can still download older versions (unless the author explicitly removed them which is possible but kinda uncommon).

i think one of the things being talked about bit me recently.
there is an add on here that i went to install on my site.
the page shows it is 2.1 through 2.3 compatible.
the problem is that the download link on the page that gives the description is to the 2.3 version that removes a certain part of it that i was wanting.
and that page showed the feature as available.
that part of the add on is now built into 2.3.
it is not built into 2.2.
you have to go into the history section and find the older version that works fully on 2.2.
