Better separation of add-ons by version

Add-ons can work in multiple versions so a single prefix would be inaccurate.

Add-ons also have multiple versions and history, denoting the XF versions they are compatible with.

You can keep your current custom field for granular compatibility and still have a prefix for the most prominent one.
Example prefix: 2.2
Custom field: 2.1, 2.2

It may technically not be 100% accurate but some organization is better than no organization.
Right now I have to manually access each Thread to know anything and from a user perspective It's not useful.

It has been brought up multime times and each time is killed because a drop-down of checkboxes is inconceivable.
Not implementing something != saying it won't be implemented.

They've never outright said it's not going to be implemented, I do not think they've ever even commented directly on whether or not they believed it was feasible, at least any time soon. Most responses I've seen by Brogan is that if you want the functionality is to use the add-on by Xon 🤷‍♂️.

It could fix the issue, but if it doesn't exist as a feature in XenForo (without using an add-on) it obviously can't be used.

In my suggestion worse case scenario a 2.0 user is expected to also check 2.1 prefixes in case some might be compatible too.
In your best case scenario, any user is supposed to enter each thread to manually check the compatibility.

I'm not even suggesting to implement multiple prefixes, my suggestion while not perfect is still better than having nothing like now.
It takes 2 minutes to create 4 prefixes.

It takes a single click to see which versions an add-on is compatible with.

Which prefix is the author supposed to choose?
If they select 2.3 then anyone running 2.2 or 2.1 is going to assume it doesn't work with those versions.

Let them make a thread for each version.
This would be a step in the wrong direction. What happens when someone has a feature request or bug report? Are we expecting the end users to search and/or make reports or requests in each thread now, for a single add-on? The same for reviews. There is no case I can think off where having separate threads for a single add-on would be beneficial to anyone (developer or user). The benefits come from a centralized location to discuss a single add-on, no matter how many XenForo versions it supports.

Don't get me wrong there is definitely room for improvement as far as how add-ons are regulated and maintained on XenForo.com, but some of the stuff you are saying does not seem thought out.

If anything we need to make things easier on the developers, we shouldn't be expecting them to do more.

could not a custom field be used for those areas?
i know that the site i am staff on makes extensive use of them.
the problem he has is the xenforo program itself is still unable to to share custom fields between its own add ons and the main program from what i was told.
when starting a new thread if it could then you could select which version to use and it would put it in the first post itself.

There should be prefixes here "2.2", "2.3" etc
No.

But it should be possible to filter and search Add-ons by the existing custom field Compatible XF 2.x versions (ID xfVersions2).

Or more generally:
It should be possible to filter and search (Resources, Threads, Media Items, ...) by custom fields (if enabled for searching / filtering).

The plugins for xf 2.2.x do not work on xf 2.3.x so in my opinion it is essential to divide the plugins because those who have not updated to 2.3 practically can no longer download the plugins for 2.2 if they have been updated to 2.3
For example now I wanted to try a theme but using xf 2.2 the admin had to attach the zip to the forum because from the download area there is only the updated theme and therefore it only works with 2.3

There is an addon that will tell you if a new version of your addon is available.

Can it be modded to show if your addons are “ready” for the latest version of xenforo.
