Auto Embed (Copy Paste Problem)

While we copy paste a youtube video, it turns into a link automatically in the editor. Thus after posting it doesn't auto embed it. But once you unlink it (or remove formating) it will auto-embed.

Example: teeeesttting 1.1 (New permalink is awesome)

Is there a way around this? Or will copy pasted link always turn into links while in editor thus adding the url bbcodes around the link?

It sounds like you have copied a hyperlink (as opposed to the plain text URL). The rich editor preserves the hyperlink when you paste. But if you copy and paste just the plain URL then it will work.

Try selecting, copying, and pasting these two lines into a new post using the rich editor. You will see the difference:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqa-6zTlzXM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqa-6zTlzXM

You can always right click a hyperlink on a webpage to copy just the URL:

Jake is correct.

If the link is wrapped in URL tags then it won't embed automatically.

Moved from bug reports to troubleshooting.

It depends where you're copying from and to.

If you copy from an existing post into the WYSIWYG editor then the URL tags will be present.

I copy a link from the navigation bar in the browser

Copying and pasting via keyboard adds the URL tags if I copy and paste from the navigation bar (Chrome)

Even if I right click, copy and then paste (from navigation bar) it's adding the URL tags.

CTRL+C and CTRL+V

Right click -> Copy then CTRV+V

Right click copy then right click paste

All are turning into direct links in the editor :(

If I right click and then click copy link address from a post:

So I guess if its just a ctrl copy paste from navigation it adds the url tags no matter what I do?

This is really unfortunate.
What this means is that the way people want to do it (Copy and Paste from YouTube) doesn't work.
Alot of the time ... this is what people want.
So this new feature doesn't work a fair amount of the time.
The workarounds suggested really don't work (The whole point was to make it easy.)

This is going to generate a steady stream of Support questions.

Update: I did find that in WinXP + Chrome that using the [Share] button you get plain text links.

But the main thing as you said DD is that most people just happen to copy paste from the navigation bar. It's really annoying to have to remove formatting or unlink every time.
Agreed.
I wonder what percentage of people do that for YouTube ?
I know it is the only way I do it.
One reason is I am often watching the video as I paste the link elsewhere and even though you can click [Share] I am hesitant to click anything while watching the video for fear the video stops. The [Share] button is javascript and doesn't interfere with the video playing but that feature is a relatively new thing on the internets.

Majority of people online are used to copy paste from the navigation bar. Even though the share link is there it's easier to copy paste from the nav bar.

I tested it on my forums, even if you post which is not already a hyper link (not wrapped in URL tags) it automatically turns into a link once its posted (in the post)

So why does Xenforo actually need to hyperlink text in the editor and add url tags to it? When even if its not added in the editor (plain url) it turns into a hyperlink once posted.

Example: I'm posting this link AND removing the hyper link, but after posting it turns into a hyperlink anyway.

It's really annoying sometimes posting the link and it auto turning into a hyper link IN the editor. Many times I use the url tags without actually pressing the bbcode button. And I have to ALWAYS remove the formatting/unlink the link which I copy pasted or else the url tags mess up. And a lot of people happen to just copy and paste the URL's from navigation bars.

this is really bothering me as well, I find that the whole point of the new feature "Auto Embed" was to be able to post links / urls of videos so they can be auto embeded without doing extra work. But indeed we are still doing extra work by removing the url tabs from the link, and obviously its going to be hard to let each and every user know to do it this way.

I think Kier might not have seen this problem coming as things work fine in Safari.
Is this a TinyMCE issue ?
or a Xenforo issue ?
