I don't mind users attaching stuff in private messages, but as this is a much more personal offering of a file to someone, perhaps a setting to specify how long a PM attachment should last before being auto-removed. So the user opens a PM, and sees that someone has sent him a file proofreadthis.docx, and under the file it would say something like "This file will be auto-removed in x days/months."
I'm not happy at all if I can't check what's being said or attached in a PC. On one of my boards some of my users are minors and their parents see it as essential the fact that I can check up on things if I need to.
I'd have thought in a situation of tension other admins would need this too.
At the same time I would want attachments as ESSENTIAL in PCs.

A storage limit per usergroup seems an excellent idea. instead of separate storage for attachments, pictures etc.

With the ability to have attachments, I could send some simple screen shots to the xf staff (e.g. Mike or Kier) without needing to know their email address, and without needing to host them somewhere.
Many times people want to send me things like simple screen shots and pdfs and I really don't want to divulge my email address. And even more importantly create a parallel path of information. Some communication by PC, some by email.

I do. How do I pass a document or diagram image to one of my mods?
How do I exchange a pic with an individual friend or draft text for consultation with a colleague?
How do I maintain confidentiality on something sensitive in user support which needs to pass across a guide document?

Very well said. I'm actually shocked that this feature has not been implemented, as a lot of members in this thread have stated that they would love to have this feature and could really benefit from it.
Why?
Three reasons I can think of right away.
1) illegal files. We sell ebooks on the site, we don't want users sharing these on the forum. Of course if they really want to they can e-mail them anyway, but I don't want to make it easy for them by offering the option on the forum.
2) attachments take up disk space. I want to control this and keep an eye on them. I don't like the fact that users can attach files through PM without me knowing about it.
3) why should I provide disk space for their files? Disk space costs money, if they want to send files to friends there's Rapidshare, e-mail or messenger. Also once the PM is send, these files sit there on my server doing nothing but taking up space. Public attachments can serve a purpose for anyone visiting the site, private attachments just take up space and are worthless to me or any visitor.

If you don't need it, simply disable it in the admin panel. This way everyone wins.

I understand the concern for illegal files.
However, on your third concern there should be a prune option to remove attachments older than X days for PCs, perhaps even a cron job that does it automatically (sufficient warning of expiry would be provided in the PC).
What a sensible solution.
