Ashamed to be British

I have to admit I'm surprised nothing has been done about it yet. All they're attempting to do is contain it, and they're clearly failing.

I'm sorry but protesting is fine, criminal damage, arson, ABH/GBH, robbery, theft etc isn't fine. The amount of people rioting (plus police complaining about overcrowded prisons) means that most of these rioters will get off without any form of punishment whatsoever. At least something has to be done, whether it's the water cannon, the rubber bullets, the tear gas or just an armed army perimeter with horse tranquillizers.

I mean, seriously.

Had a friend who was supposed to come for dinner today. Police have been knocking on doors and advising people to stay in after there was some reported activity.

Just found this on JACK-FM's website, posted at 8.50am this morning:

Police are on standby to tackle potential violence.
Hampshire police have been advising people in Southampton to stay inside through their Facebook page.
It's after messages were posted on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter inviting people to engage in disorder in the city.
So far there've been no signs of rioting in the Jack FM patch.
Police say they are monitoring communities and have resources on standby which can be deployed if necessary.

At the same time as Hampshire police are heading to London...

Specially trained officers sent to tackle riots.
Hampshire and Sussex police have sent up specially trained officers up to London to help tackle the riots.

Those advertising or asking for trouble to be caused should be locked in a cell for a few days.

We haven't enough cells for the thousands involved, prisons are already over-crowded and every police cell in London had been taken up by this morning - they have been shipping them out to police cells in Essex, Kent, Surrey, Hampshire, etc. just to make room for tonight.

They've started rioting in the city of Salford, I received a phone call from an Aunt saying the precinct was closed and cars were being blown up

The police are going to be in big trouble when it kicks off everywhere, apart from London.

Ahem... if it kicks off

I'll be surprised if it kicks-off big style anywhere apart from the major cities, that's why I was surprised by your first post about Southampton, also news about trouble in Oxford (McDonalds & a car set on fire), but I don't expect any major trouble in these smaller cities, just isolated copy-cat instances.

Most of the extra cops being sent to London are from county forces, like here in Sussex, where we have a couple of small cities (Brighton & Hove and Chichester), not the big city forces, which can't risk releasing specialist riot units.

The only real major concern is London, and if the cops start firing baton charges, rubber bullets, as they have never before been deployed on the UK mainland, only in Northern Ireland, and experience there has shown they often have the opposite effect to that desired. :(

Hopefully with 10,000 extra police and extra helicopters (our local police one, normally stationed 5 miles from me, is still up there - leaving us with no air cover) they can put an end to it.

Rubber bullets, tasers, beanbag shotgun shells, water canons, flash bangs, tear gas and dogs.

They have plenty of dogs, horses, tasers, and could be using rubber bullets for the first time ever on the mainland.

I don't think they have flash bangs & tear gas, nor trained in their use, certainly no mention has been made of them, again I think they have only ever been used in Northern Ireland, not on the mainland.

ETA: Experts are saying water cannon would be useless, idea for dealing with & forcing back large crowds, but useless for smaller groups that are popping-up all over the place.

As for batons not being used on mainland Britain: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/7939699.stm

There are some noises that I've never heard before outside... Like and older train (steam) with their horn. Three short bursts every few seconds, it's moving away from the area. I think

But they're most likely smaller copycat ones. I just hope that they grow

Edit: add three helicopters. They seem to be heading southward toward the beach though. Seems safe here.
