If anyone is currently watching Exposure: Heart Hospital on ITV1 (England). It reminded me of a cause I support, and suggest anyone who reads this also supports.

Its a simple request, and that if you are not a registered organ donor, that you register, in the UK you can find out how here, http://www.uktransplant.org.uk/ukt/how_to_become_a_donor/how_to_become_a_donor.jsp and if you are not in the UK I urge you to sign up to your local area register.

I have always been a supporter of organ donors, and made the choice many years ago to become a donor, so should anything unfortunate happen to me, that someone else may continue to live. At least I know, even if I fail to do anything of note in life, I can help someone else if I die.

Its simple in my eye, when you kick the bucket, your not gonna care or not if your missing a few organs, why deprive someone else of an extended life.

The arguement I often make.

If you needed an organ transplant to live, and a donor was available, would you take that organ? If the answer is yes, you have NO excuse not to register.

So please register as soon as possible :)

I have also added a multi option poll. Be honest. The results... are often eye opening.

Yes, I am an organ donor. I have even given permission in my living will to temporarily keep me on life support even when there is no hope of recovery, for the sole purpose of keeping denotable organs viable. When my time is up, they can strip me down like a '72 Dodge Dart parts car.

I'm a donor. My only fear being an organ donor, is that they may prematurely deem me a vegetable and start pulling parts before the man upstairs is ready for me...just because they need the parts.
There is some risk this may happen to you .... be careful.
You might also get hit with a Meteor.
Statistically-speaking I think you'd be wisest to get a Meteor Umbrella to avoid being hit.

Yep I'm a registered donor, but by the time I'm gone, they may not be any good.
I'm not because of basically what Peggy said above lol.

Obviously, we all hope to live a long life and never need to be an organ donor... however think of it like this, what if you got hit by car, or have a stroke, where your brain is dead but your other organs are still fine.
Would you not rather take the 2 minutes to register and save someone else :)

In the slim chance that my death may help, I am a registered organ donor.
My cadaver will also be donated to science for research, transplantation, education and training.

I'm fairly sure that it isn't legal to do that in the medical world. If your a vegetable, you have to have a DNR or something for them to pull the plug. A trust worthy person with medical power of attorney can physically chose to kill you for parts.

I'm definitely a donor - i'm uncertain if I would take one myself or not.

My younger brother was killed (at only 17 years old) in a car accident. He had opted in to be an organ donor, and my family agreed as well. He donated his heart, liver, both lungs, both kidneys and his pancreas to people who needed them, and in doing so, saved five lives. As well as the fact that he saved lives, it also helped my family (including my very young brothers and sisters) to better cope with the tragedy, knowing that at least something good came out of our loss.

I'm not sure about anywhere else, but in Australia at least, your family has the power to overrule any decision you make. You can put it on your drivers license, your will, your Medicare details, even tattoo it to your body - your family still gets right of refusal.

For this reason it's very important to talk to your family about your wishes, and ensure they know you want to donate your organs.

So sorry to hear about your brother Coby.

I am sure it does help a bit to know that his selflessness decision to be a donor resulted in saving 5 other people's lives.

I heard a sad thing not long ago though, it seems here in Australia, the ad campaigns to become a donor have been a little too successful, with the majority of us prepared to offer our bits after death to help out another, resulting in a wonderful bounty of potential organs.

It transpires that at this exact point in time (I am sure it will change though, don't let it change your mind about being a donor) Due to a lack of funding, there is not enough organ retrieval teams, nor specialist transplant surgical teams to make use of the large number of potential organs we now have, which is rather tragic. People are dying for want of a transplant... for which there are the organs, just no one to retrieve them nor transplant them.

I do hope the situation turns around soon here.
