ALWAYS Save a Site Backup To Your Computer!

I do it good old way. Using FileZilla FTP, I drag public_html folder to my desktop. In PhpMyAdmin, I use export function to download gzipped DB. I do both once a week. It doesn't take more than 1 min to start them.

So, do you have to do both or can you just drag the public_html folder to the desktop and you're good? Remember, you're talking to someone that knows nothing about the backend (SQL/Servers/etc) of the sites so I want to be sure that I don't skip any steps :)

Yes there is ... BUT if your site is small ... say 1 GB you are not going to download that every day .. are you ?
whatever they told you about backing up your site on your local computer must be kidding you. I'm not even talking about a medium site of 5 gigs ...

Let's be real ... reputable hosts backup your data OFF SITE .. somewhere else .. it is your responsibility BUT THEY PROVIDE the means for a reasonable backup method and i'm sure as hell that doesn't cost much .. (Ask any Rackspace or linode customer ... we're talking small change of less than 5 dollars a month for a full hard drive image)

bottom line : find a host that provide backup .... downloading to your local computer isn't and shouldn't be the way

Good point. I don't remember anyone at any of my hosts offering an off-site data backup option. I'll have to ask because it's definitely worth the extra couple of dollars if I don't have to worry about it.

It is almost always YOUR responsibility to fully back-up your data to a safe location on a regular basis, and yours alone! Read your ToS or contract, the ultimate word on your host's obligations (or lack thereof).

Yes it is our responsibility alone .. and it is YOUR responsibility to provide the means to do so

I'm not sure about shared hosts ... but ArnyVee ... and old site like yours deserves its own VPS :) think about that

Do you have a VPS? How do I start the comparisons as to who to go with if that's how I wanted to go?

Go with Linode.com THE BEST
I think they offer Cpanel or direct admin for few dollars a month. or I can set everything up for you and save some resources .. Also they have a step by step how to go about doing everything your self .
Check them out (Oh and backup for a small 512 VPS is $2/month : one click backup :) and I am not affiliated with them in any way, form or shape :D an honest testimony )

I had a managed VPS with KnownHost before moving to Tugoso and was extremely happy with them.

I'll check out Linode.

Peggy I'll be happy to help you set up your linode slice .. then point you to where you can learn how to do basic stuff your self without any admin panel.

it's not that complicated :D

Linode is very good. I'm currently using them.

Before them I was using intovps, which is only 10 a month for the same amount of memory, and had incredibly good uptime. They use datacenters in Romania and Atlanta, GA. The Atlanta location is the same datacenter as Linode uses, if I remember properly.

The thing about an unmanaged VPS is you seriously have to do everything yourself. If the machine is running and network accessible, the host has done their end of the deal. It is entirely your responsibility for the rest.

I'm used to cPanel. I checked them out and it looks oooooooooooooo CONFUSING!!!

don't be scared :D :D but it also depends on your site size .. if (unlike ArneeVee) your site is just a tiny WP then find a good shared host. Others can suggest few providers that DO BACKUPS :D

No no, not going back to shared. I have plans. I've had a managed vps for a few years and want to stay with that.

For managed VPS you generally can't go wrong with Servint. I was with them from 2005 to 2009, and never regretted it. They are a bit more expensive than most though, they start at 50/month.

Still, if you can get past the initial setup of a machine on an unmanged VPS provider, it is almost the same as a managed service if you don't have a habit of sending support tickets in. You can automate most things, including downloading and installing security patches.

Not only should people make regular backups, they should also check the integrity of said backups, to.
I take several database backups each day to an offsite FTP, but I also randomly download one and check it's integrity.

You know what? I've thought about this all morning and I've made my decision........

I'm going to see what happens over the next few days, but I think I'm going to stay where I am, with Tugoso, if I can get some reassurances from Chris and Dave.

I thought about it this way. You know how when a restaurant gets closed down from a bad inspection. When they re-open, that is the cleanest, best place to eat. Because they know they're on the radar and they'll be inspected regularly.

Well that's how I feel about this. I'm thinking (hoping) they've learned their lesson and will have the backup server separated from the server rack that we're on. And I know I've learned MY lesson... never store your site backup on your server!!

Chris and Dave are professionals. WiredTree is professional. This could have happened to anyone, and to any host, really.
