Alert count shows as "undefined" for some users

Reported by several users of my community. This one is harder to diagnose. Users have said, after they clear the alerts, this doesn't happen again. So our theory is that there is a bug in the full upgrade process from XF 2.1.x -> 2.3.3, and users that had alerts that weren't checked prior to the upgrade are seeing this bug.
 
Given enough time the issue resolves itself. Doesn't seem to be a priority for the development team, so you'll probably just have to let users know that it won't happen again once they clear their alerts.
Did you try Rebuild user caches to see if the alert numbers were cached and rebuilding it set the correct number? Just a guess.
