Add-on Update Notifier

Add-on Update Notifier 1.1.8 Patch Level 1

No permission to download
So it's expected to be visible in production?
Yes, if you have advanced options enabled it shows.

I put them into a separate option group that is low down in the list so that those options are "less in the way" for admins that have advanced options enabled 😊👌

I could add some help text there to make it clearer for some future release if someone else stumbles upon it 😁

I gave my review at the time when there was no restriction on the number of add-ons, this is now being reduced in stages to currently 30. This is a shame because it limits the Add-on quite quickly for a lot of people.

We'll increase the limit to 40 once we figure out a way that is aligned with the forum rules.

Also the amount of add-ons in use on the average forum falls under the 30 limit 😊 we've analyzed data from 327 forums when we came up with this number 👌

It is more a shame that you a blaming the author for requesting money for a legal api service..;)
Difference of opinion, first no restriction and then reduced to 30. What is it going to be next week? On that basis, it is no longer worth 5 stars to me. That's all.

That is where you are mistaken. He never "blamed" someone for requesting money for a service. He commented that he disliked that the add-on, which he initially downloaded and installed, was being stripped of features which were previously part of the download (instead of old users being grandfathered in).

The one thing I will add, and it's not jumping to anyone's defence, this add-on alone has saved me, and I suspect many others, countless time in maintaining add-on updates. When a user factors in their time, how much they would expect to earn for the hours they put in and then compare that with the time that all developers put in to create and maintain their add-ons, the resources they use to do so, the server costs incurred to host them, the price of them is more than a bargain.

No one is forced to use add-ons, it is by choice and maybe by some necessity, so we should be grateful that there is a decent group of developers out there willing to provide a vast range, some for free, some to cover costs, some shock-horror to even earn a living although I can't see anyone living such an extravagant lifestyle on XF add-ons alone, and if they choose to put a price on them, licence them, then it's up to the individual to decide if they wish to buy into them, or not.

:)

I mean this with the greatest of respect - but it's a free addon, or was (completely free prior) - this was bound to happen. There are costs involved which span beyond a kind developer just lending their time to something free for the benefit of others and their reputation. From my understanding, this requires hardware/servers to run the API service and as the addon becomes more popular, which it most likely will - those resources will be spread more thin and thus, the cost will continue or perhaps grow.

Whilst it's a little bit frustrating something goes from free to paid, there is still the option of a free tier of the addon. If that's not enough, then the most expensive upgrade is 12 euros per YEAR.

I don't think it's reasonable to slight Mazzly (and I know you haven't done-so, I'm just talking generally to anyone who may have the same issue) when they have done so good. Mazzly is obviously very dedicated and honest (in my opinion) thus far.

PS - The above isn't about your review, reviews are subjective and personal to the person giving them. I'm just adding to the comment you made about the changes.

The tiered approached was mentioned early on in the development conversation, so this was not a bait and switch, though it should likely have been part of the initial release so people were aware of it.

That said, it costs money to host, the cost to add more API checks is negligible and it's still better than a giant blatant donation button taking over the top of the add-on page.

🤷‍♂️ if you don't like the approach, don't use the add-on (like I didn't use the previous one). Considering the level of support, and everything else that @mazzly is putting into a possibly temporary solution (because this will hopefully be a core feature at some point) not sure how you can really complain about less than $15/year.

@Forsaken
Please be fair - the donate button was smaller than the current banner and it was independent of the functionality. ;)
Which doesn't mean that I have a problem with the 12 euros (in my case) - but we should try to remain objective.

I installed this addon 11 hours ago. I also received 3 alerts about a new addon update, but my addon listings are all displaying this icon:

I have my API key added also, but my XF license is expired; does it matter?
The latest addon still has the same problem.
What else do I need to check?
