Thank you very much oracle. I have one more question. When i try to update xenporta and xenmedio, i copied the last version files overwrite to old version files and then run the upgrade addons but now my portal doesn't work.

How can i upgrade addons without any problem? Delete old and install new method seems a bit hard becuse of editing modules one by one again.

Please always check the notes for each upgrade. The standard practice is exactly what you shared but sometimes the upgrade requires you to delete certain files/folders prior to upgrading.

I am not sure what the issue with the "please try again later" message. I would suggest you ensure you are doing everything correctly and then...try again later :) For XenMedio plz make sure your data/local and data/media folders are 0777 . It is very strange that both upgrades would provide the same error as they are unrelated to each other. It makes me think there is another issue. Something strange like...you decided to backup your database prior to the upgrade, the backup process was running so your db was locked, and that was the message you were given. I am just guessing here.

What is your Module Cache Time set to? If it isn't set to NOW change it then check.

Hi Jaxel,

My portal is going incredibly slow, when setting the portal to pull in the 5 latest posts it was taking 25-30seconds+ to load. I changed it to one and it took about 3-5 seconds. I notice on your site its really fast. Is there anything I can tweak for this? Thanks

Edit: Im not sure how this could make a difference but recently I set the forum that holds the portal news to receive an RSS feed that adds about 10 stories a day or so. Works fine when its cached but yeah im worried new visitors will be discouraged by the long loading times

I like troubleshooting... I hate giving technical support. The problem is many errors are caused because users can't read, or if it's a legitimate error, they expect me to drop everything and tend to their beck and call. I've been busy, lay off. And I absolutely HATE it when people harass me over private messages; the more you harass me, the less I will want to help you. I read every post, I don't respond to many because I don't have a response... yet.

wow - seriously?

tech support is what you have to give when you put out applications...if you expect people to use them.

People would not send you private messages "harassing" you if you would actually acknowledge that someone is having an issue.

WHen multiple people, post the same things over and over and over, and you simple ignore them...and then pick and choose a couple easy ones to answer...yah...people are going to contact you.

Your add on is buggy..from day one...if you don't want your customers to "harass" you, put out a higher quality product.

A simple acknowledgement goes a long way.

Keep in mind, if people wanted to be programmers they wouldn't need your module.

If you can't be bothered with people trying to get YOUR stuff to work, thats fine, simply state that in the beginning, BEFORE A PERSON DOWNLOADS IT

that what you have made is offered as is, and once we download it, you could give a crap and we are on our own, figure it out or die because you don't care whether we get it working or not, whether you have bugs or not...i mean, its all about what you want to do in coding right?

Ironic though, for someone who says they are unemployed and needs people to help support them as they make modules "as their job".

Eventually though, some other coder will make identical modules...they won't be buggy and they won't have a problem taking "time" to at least acknowledge someone using their product.

Then no one will harrass you or use your stuff or donate and you won't have to worry about it i guess, then you can just code for yourself without offering any technical SUPPORT

...carry on.

wow - seriously?
As I said... I have no issues with people telling me about bugs; bugs are clearly my fault and I have no problems hearing about them, or fixing them; feature requests either. My problem is that many of the "bugs" people post aren't bugs at all, but their failure to read the instructions, or even look at their available options. If I take the time to stop and explain simple things, like the permissions system for XenForo, how to upgrade a mod, or how to customize skins, to everyone who asks, I'll never get anything done. Not to mention, that has nothing to do with this mod, and I shouldn't have to hold people's hands.

You ever see that show "The IT Crowd"? Everytime someone calls, they begrudgingly answer the phone and the first thing they say is "IT, did you try turning it off and on again?". This is honestly how most people in tech support feel. Yes, I know, its a TV show, a comedy, and it's a joke... but thats honestly very close to the first thing many in tech support ask: "is it plugged in correctly?".

guess what, not everyone is going to have the same level of understanding when they are customers.

And yes, people will ask dumb questions, but if you start taking that out on all customers, you won't have any.

Instead of ignoring, simply say....sounds like you have an issue that is unrelated to the mod, be sure to check permissions etc.

again, SAY what support you offer, and in the least ACKNOWLEDGE peoples problems, rather than just ignoring them as you have half of the issues in this thread.

And just because someone wrote instructions, doesn't mena they are easy to follow.

and bottom line if you can't get stuff done due to customer support...you are doing to much.

make your producets more user friendly, compile faqs or a wiki, put some simple videos together...rather than expecting people to read through 1100 posts and 57 pages to find an answer

I don't watch the IT crowd because i don't have time for much tv (maybe you would have more time for customers if you watched less???)

But sounds like they are the stereotypical pompous nerds who know ONE thing about life and have to belittle others for not knowing it. I bet those guys don't have many friends, dates, or know much outside of IT do they? They aren't very successful clearly, or else they would be RUNNING a company and not working in one...thjey would hire people to do support instead of doing it themselves...think about that.

Yes people will say "I don't see an 'any' key" and you can call it PICNIC and I-D ten - T, hahahahaha big joke

in the end, they are the ones that make your paycheck...and if you are unemployed, it would seem you would strie to make your "employers" ie customers, a little more comfortable with providing you a paycheck

again its just my 2¢ and the good thing about the global economy...if you don't want to too "busy" to give your customers with good product and excellent support, someone else gladly will come along and do it for you...then you won't be harrassed any more with people who failed to read instructions.

Jaxel a suggestion to reduce alot of questions already answered is to add more information at the thread starting post instead of spread around in 57 pages. Like the changelog. It is not in the first post. It is somewhere in the thread.

The product is really nice and functional but the information needed to understand and use it is not easily obtainable. Especially as XF doesn't support search within a thread afaik.

Indeed, that is a good idea...

There is a problem with recent threads module.

Let's say you have private forums and there are new posts in them, users who have no permission to see those threads will see 3 threads instead of 5 in the module if for example recentthreads_limit is 5 and there are 2 new posts in 2 threads in the private forums

Ah...

Yes, I remember that...
I was adding a condition to the XenForo Thread.php Model to help with this:
http://xenforo.com/community/threads/add-conditon-argument-to-thread-model.10786/

This will allow you to filter out unwanted threads - before pulling them in to count for the recent thread display.

This way if you set the cut off at 10 and want two active forums filtered out of the the results, the conditions runs before the recent thread query and doesn't affect the returns.

My post got buried so here it is again. Its not a cache issue also...

What happens if you completely disable the recentthreads block?

Just a question could it be the 'issue' below?

Jaxel,

A quick heads up, as a forum gets more and more threads your RecentThreads block will slow the system down. As an example, on my test forum with 230,000 threads the portal page can take up to 13 seconds to load. This is due to the fact you have no date cutoff inside RecentThreads.php.

As a quick fix I have limited the search to the last 7 days of threads which have been posted. It might be worth adding into the block settings a "Last number of days to search threads".

Code:
                $conditions = array(
                        'last_post_date' => array('>', XenForo_Application::$time - 86400 * 7),
                        'deleted' => false,
                        'moderated' => false,
                        'forum_ids' => $params['option']['recentthreads_forum']
                );

That takes my portal load time down from 13 seconds to:

Timing: 0.0722 seconds Memory: 5.270 MB DB Queries: 17

I actually applied Deeb's fix in the most recent version... in fact, I made it 1 day, instead of 7 days... so it should be even faster.

Ah....

Might want to make a note that those of us with .... quieter boards may seem some anomolies with this cutoff set...
I made some edits to this time cut off and everything is back to normal now...

What happens if you completely disable the recentthreads block?
Hi Jaxel,

Sorry I should of been more specific, its actually recentnews module Im referring too, I dont use the recentthreads module. But disabling it makes my page lighting fast. Ive got it set to 3 at the moment and just then took about 5-6 seconds to load. But as news changes I notice that even though the charecter cutoff is set to 1500 the threads that are longer seem to really bog down the loading times. I changed it to 5 now and it took 13 seconds to load. site is @ mmazone.com.au. Any ideas? cheers

Jaxel, not sure if this will help to know for troubleshooting comparison

My site uses RecentNews as well and it loads fine. My settings are: recentnews_limit 3, recentnews_truncate 1600, recentnews_pagenav enabled, 5 hours cache time, no permission settings, it pulls from 1 forum. I have 1 promoted thread from a different forum, and 2 other threads pulled normally. Changing the truncate setting has no apparent effect on the load times, as it was unlimited until recently. One of my threads is extremely long as well and contains many images.
