Photobox is great in this things!
When you are going to upload some images, once selected it create instantly thumbnails, so you see uploading images in seconds and you can name, describe, working on them during the uploading.
I think they simply create very little sized jpeg (with quality like 30 or 40) and upload them before the originals. It takes less then 3/4 seconds for a dozen of photos.
