XenSocial - The Social Media Style Experience [Paid] 1.0.19

No permission to buy ($20.00)
Sal Collaziano updated XenSocial - The Social Media Style Experience with a new update entry:

Username/Usergroup Visuals and Options for changing relating to old/new threads

Version 1.0.10

- Added usergroup rankings and username colors to the social feed.

- Added an option to have threads marked as READ as a user scrolls through topics in the social feed. With this feature selected, users don't refresh the page and see the same topics at the top unless they've been replied to since they last viewed the thread in the Social Feed. This does not affect threads in the legacy/classic forum area. This option is probably best for very busy communities.

I'm trying this out on my test forum. I find it confusing but don't mind admitting I don't use social media so I happily accept it does work for those people that do. So (for the sake of the old farts that like things the way they are) it will not replace New Posts. But it looks like it could be great with loads of postential but I cannot use it yet on my live forum:

Images are not working, either by drag and drop or using the attach button.

I don't want to add (yet another) main navigation, My preference would be that after opening the feed there is an extra tab that shows the legacy New Posts view, ie there would be three tabs (configurable)

Social Feed - My feed - New posts.

User could then choose their preference for which is open by default.

1. I'll add a "Legacy View" tab (that term will be editable in phrases).

What is the issue you’re having with the “attach files” button? Drag and drop attachment functionality hasn’t been coded in as most people are using the social feed on a mobile device.

There’s an option in the adminCP to show users only threads and posts they haven’t seen yet.

This is what I see when I upload the image

Then when I submit reply (no image)

If I use the image icon above text editor I can only submit an image via URL:

That is dissapointing as you don't mention in the description this is for mobile only. I was really excited to see this so happy to pay the $20 to do a trial, but if it cannot work on desktop then I won't be able to use it.

This isn't what I meant. I think it would be best if there was a 3rd tab at the top to show the legacy new posts view. This would be a a lot more convenient for users who want to switch views rather than having two separate main xF navigation items (or sub navigation items). I appreciate there is a legacy view that shows the post in the standard thread view, I just mean to easily switch from social feed to my feed to new posts all at the top of the social feed. Idealy the user has a preference for which tab is default.

For example if a thread has 100s of replies, you can only load a max of 20 at a time so it's necessary to keep loading more in order to get to the end. At that point you'd want to switch to legacy. Granted the issue of having to keep loading more comments button is also like that on facebook. However this addon has the chance to be the best of both worlds.

I'd definitely continue using it if this things can be fixed, but the mobile only for attachments is a dealbreaker unfortunately

XenSocial is not a mobile only add-on. Like you, I prefer using a desktop or notebook computer over a mobile device - so that's where I most often it myself.

I don't recall exactly what - but there was some type of challenge relating to the drag and drop functionality. It wasn't intentionally left out. It's something on our list to figure out. Now that we have somebody who relies on it as much as your community does, we'll give it priority attention. My relative, who does all the complex coding, is away until Friday afternoon. We'll be on this then...

We've been discussing various options for a third tab with other customers. We'll have to discuss the possibility of the tab you're looking for...

I understand not wanting to add another tab to your navigation bar. What if you were to add a drop-down option to your legacy New Posts button? That way you'd avoid adding another tab position - but easily allow viewers to switch between XenSocial and Legacy New Posts?

I will start a conversation with you relating to the attachment issue you're having. We'll need more information as this is a feature that's working for everyone else.

I have got a few of these since installing 1.0.12 on my main forum

Download the latest public version of XenSocial. It fixes that issue. I’d send it to you via direct message but I’m on the road.

I'm a bit confused. I presumed if I reply with aquote in lgacy view, it should show up as nested under that the post I quoted in Social Feed. For example here I replied (post 8) to post 6, but in Social Feed is is not shown as a reply to that post.

Also I note that in ACP it says my licence is invalid.

@Sal Collaziano Sorry for my random messages in your demo site. I appreciate if you can delete them later.

Replies are working very nice in the social feed. But there is no nested replies if we enter threads. I know that might be not in your radar. But are you considering to add reply or nested replies in coming future for consistency?

That was the basis of my previous request for nested replies—it would otherwise create inconsistencies between the social feed and the legacy view. Therefore, implementing full nested replies alongside the social feed solution would be the better option.

That's what I thought this meant:

🔁 Threaded Reply-to-Reply
  • Reply directly to a specific comment within a thread, creating nested conversations just like modern social platforms.
  • Replies are visually indented to show the conversation hierarchy.

@alfaNova and @Mr Lucky - you two are referring to two different things.

@Mr Lucky, I'm looking into the nesting issue. Replies to posts are supposed to be nested...

alfaNova wants legacy threads to be nested. That's an entirely different add-on.

alfaNova: Replies are working very nice in the social feed. But there is no nested replies if we enter threads. I know that might be not in your radar. But are you considering to add reply or nested replies in coming future for consistency?

Me: I'm not sure what you're referring to. Are you asking for nested replies within the classic forum structure in addition to XenSocial?

alfaNova: definetely yes. this is what I mean. I know there is some additional addons but I always prefer solutions instead of seperate addons.

Me: That would be a pretty significant endeavor... You COULD just make XenSocial the homepage of your forum... Others have already done this... Now this all being said, we had originally set out to make exactly what you're referring to BEFORE we started on XenSocial. If you'd like, we can pull that out of the ole bag and bring it to life as a new add-on...

I have kind of a smile on my face with amazement at what coders go through... For the past few full days (and nights) we've been working on perfecting everything - but there are some things that just baffle us... We're going to figure this out.

I just have to say, coding is tough...

I need to get about an hour's sleep as I haven't slept in a while. Please do me a favor and re-install the version you have, but select the "Overwrite existing files for add-on rebuilds / upgrades" option - and let me know if that helps. Then hard refresh your browser when viewing the thread in the social feed. Just a quick YES or NO - and I'll know what to do.

In the meantime, I'm going to reset and be back in about an hour or so.

I had done that originally. But I am getting a bit confused now. It seems refreshing the page does change the view. But I'm getting a bit confused as it seems to work sometimes but then randomly not work. And if you do an edit it switches to legacy view.

Also if you viewing a social feed , but click on the title it switches to legacy view.

The title clicking to the legacy thread was a feature request but if you feel it's important to have it click back to the social feed, we can maybe add that in as a feature. Editing can only be done in the legacy area.

If you're running Cloudflare, please do a cache purge. The JavaScript file powering the social feed (feed.js) appears to still be the old version - Cloudflare is likely serving a cached copy of it since the URL hasn't changed. Even though the file on your server was updated via the "Overwrite" option, Cloudflare doesn't know that and keeps serving the old one.

In your Cloudflare dashboard: Caching -> Configuration -> Purge Everything

If you're not using Cloudflare or if that doesn't work, let me know and we'll get you a new version number which will force a fresh download.

For a quick and easy test just to see if this is working for your forum at all, try starting a topic in an admin area that only you can see - to not disturb the rest of your community. Do a simple test just to see if the basic functionality is working - like my screenshot below.
