I just tried it with the latest version of 1.3 as of this moment and it worked fine.

In this version the template hooks were removed and tms added, the thread readers link was changed.

Also the permissions were changed. Now you can set them for users to view thread readers for own threads and/or all threads.

Would it be possible to add a record to the table that shows when someone first reads the thread? I've been asked to take a look at this by someone to expose the thread_read_date data and add it to the template, but it changes each time a new post is made, and that post is read.

Not sure if it's a bug, but when a thread is locked the "who read is thread" disappears.
