Who is going to forumcon 2012?

geared toward beginner forum admins.

You had it right the first time. Likely why those of us who are going are going. Likely why they do the event.

And the whole XenForo/vB thing has added lots of drama. I'd guess they'll be a few public questions asked about it and a lot of private comments made that people would not put into writing where they could be quoted. Should be fun day in SF. In addition to the infomercials, tempura at the O Izakaya and check out the America's Cup goings at the Embarcadero.

I notice Viglink, the event producer, doesn't work with Xenforo.

Could he say um anymore times?

About as many times as people who keep viewing the past ForumCon.com videos, keep posting about them, keeping the ForumCon.com topic floating at the top of "What's New".

I'm sure the VigLink person watching is thinking, with enemies like this, who needs friends.

It prompted me to go visit the VigLink site, ask some questions (what forums does their product work with) and look into it further when I see them on June 12 (aka "XenForo Shoe Drop Day").

Viglink seems to work fine on my Xenforo forum.

Interesting, they said it was not supported but they were talking to XenForo about it.

Do you find the VigLink a useful tool? I like to see good content based ads when I'm on a website. I think it enhances the content value, tells me about new stuff I might like. From the forum operator side, if it results in some payback, mo better.

Be fair, how many of us forum geeks are really that well spoken, or even want to do public speaking at all? If you want to criticize him, try criticizing on the content of his presentation.

The fact of the matter is someone who is hired as the frontman of a company should be good at public speaking, as it is part of the job.

A major portion of what my job does (At least for the part oft he year I'm not dealing with the interns) is public speaking, whether it is in internal meetings, to University students discussing the intern program, other companies, or at conventions.

Uming nearly every other sentence shows a lack of preparedness, and makes the presentation incredibly awkward. I'm not sure whether or not you've been in the audience of a speaker who does it, but it is extremely uncomfortable as you feel just how tense they are.

Also, some of the most eloquent and best speakers I know are people who dress up as wizards and play old school D&D and real life roleplay as vampires for Vampire the Masquerade. The fact of the matter is that he shouldn't have been in the job that he was (He's left since then) if he cannot do guest speaking, especially at something that is essentially about pitching your product.

Read my response above.

I don't see any need for myself to go to ForumCon, and from what I've heard it wasn't really that informative to others that went the last year. I would have been interested in seeing Kier guest speak, as he's always had interesting views and ideas for forum in general, and in seeing Winter Wong speech, but when there is only one speaker each year (With Kier cancelling the last year there were none) there isn't much interest there for me.

Ok. Not sure why anyone would go to something like this? Is there really a need for this? hey whatever floats your boat just seems like there wouldn't really be a need for learning the how, why, what, where of forums when you can read it all online.

HMS. I can see your reason. LOL I would do the same! I would got to Europe for a conference on forums if I got paid to do it but I would be having a ton of fun while I'm there too.

I won't argue with that, it is a good point. I'm not going to defend IB's hiring practices, lol! And, I think Adrian personally is a good guy and very sharp too, I just wasn't too impressed with the content of his presentation.

Viglink has a Javascript code that can be dropped into any website including xF.

It does have value depending on your forum. I think it best suits automotive and electronics forums, with the myriad of products that are available on ebay, Amazon and such.

I find it to be a useful supplement to our Adsense earnings. I've had to find creative ways to encourage my users to click, particularly the use of ebay RSS feeds. It works for me anyway.

I could barely pay attention to the presentation, and I shut it off after a few minutes because of how it was.

My post had nothing to do about whether he is a good guy or not, or IB, just in the bad presentation. People do not pay $70-100 to go see presentations like that.

For some reason, this is what I imagine Forumcon would look like:

Ah but for TEN presentations.

I'm more interested in good info from knowledgeable person who can provide accurate and useful answers to follow up questions vs. a slick presentation from an "I'll get back to you" person.

Thanks. Good info.

I can never afford to go to these types of things.

Dude! Your XenPorta is probably single best XenForo add on. I wouldn't be getting XenForo without it. Charge $100 for it tossing in some support vs. asking for donations. You'd be putting on presentations, staying at the Ritz.

Conventions are never about learning, they are about meeting potential new clients, customers, vendors etc. The biggest value a convention have is the people participating. It is also a good excuse to get drunk....
